Episode 4 perfectly mixes the awkwardness of trying to make new friends with the high-risk job our protagonists signed up for.
In Episode 4, which is probably the strongest installement of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1 so far, John and Jane run into and befriend another Smith couple working for the same spy company. The Other John and Jane work at the Super High-Risk level, a step up from our protagonists. What starts as a fun night for the two couples to bond turns into a deadly hangover in the rainforest.
“Double Date” starts with John and Jane enjoying a well-deserved day off. While strolling through the farmer’s market, the pair come across John’s ex, Rooney. After an awkward encounter, Jane praises John for having dated a woman with “one hand.” He is confused by the statement as he doesn’t remember Rooney missing a limb.

A mix-up at a coffee stand leads to John and Jane meeting another Smith, who works for the same company. So naturally, the two Smith couples decide to get together at our John and Jane’s home for a dinner party and a few drinks.
When Other John and Jane arrive, the encounter is initially awkward. Especially as they reveal that they never get cryptic passive-aggressive messages from Hihi (who they have nicknamed “Sup”).
Jane gives Other Jane a house tour and the two women compare decorations, gun safes, panic rooms, and, of course, Johns. Other Jane offers some friendly yet cryptic advice against asking too many questions about the Company.
What happens during the double date?
The two couples are having a whale of a time discussing their lives and jobs. We find out that Other John had another Jane assigned before meeting his current “wife.” When Jane mentions the pact she made with John about parting ways after making enough money, Other John finds the idea preposterous and laughs way too hard. Walking away from the Company is probably not an option.
After getting a few more drinks in them and talking about how cool Dolly Parton is, the Other Smiths admit to having had to kill another pair of Smiths before. (Could they be referring to the Smiths we saw terminated in the pilot?).
Suitably drunk, Our John and Jane decide to join the Other Smiths on the Super High-Risk mission they’re supposed to complete. Our John and Jane work at the High-Risk level, so they see it as the perfect opportunity to try higher-level work without committing.
What happens to John and Jane during the Super High-Risk mission?
Unfortunately, their new friends weren’t planning on letting Our Smiths just tag along. Instead, they tricked them into getting on the helicopter and doing the mission for them.
John and Jane found themselves somewhere in the Amazon forest where they were supposed to deliver guns to a fringe group. However, as the group’s captain was expecting Other John and Jane, things turned violent. John and Jane had to fight their way out with a machete, killing the boss.
When Other John calls and hears about what happened, he’s not remorseful for tricking his new mates but does give them the entire fee for the job. The new budding friendship soured after the event, especially as Our John and Jane weren’t supposed to kill anyone.
How does Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 4 end?
Back home, John checked his ex’s social media account and confirmed what he already knew; Rooney has two hands. Jane lied about it to him because she got jealous.
He gets in bed with Jane, and the two share a heart-to-heart. During the mission, they said “I love you” to each other because they thought they were about to die. Yet, now the couple confirms they love each other. Hilariously, the episode ends with John and Jane agreeing about how much they hate the other Smiths.
