Summary

This episode is literally about John and Jane visiting a marriage counselor. There’s no twist, they’re not there on a spy mission, and they are genuinely trying to solve their relationship issues. On the bright side, Sarah Paulson delivers a fun performance as an overly house-proud therapist.

As we’ve seen in Episode 5, John and Jane have marital issues. So, naturally, they decide to see a therapist (played by Sarah Paulson) in Episode 6. This is almost a bottle episode as all the action takes place in the therapy room, but we also see flashbacks from key moments that led to conflicts between our leads during their missions. The pair also received their second fail of Season 1, but Mr. and Mrs. Smith chose not to show much of what led to it.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 6 Recap

During the first session, the therapist describes the Smiths as “misaligned,” specifically as John wants babies, Jane doesn’t, and he thinks their boss is favoring her (to be fair, Hihi did offer her a replacement partner).

Why are John and Jane in marriage counseling?

The two recall a previous mission where John wanted to take the lead by going undercover to play poker with the targets. Unfortunately, the conversations John entertained while at the table with the targets upset Jane. And it’s easy to see why. He does say questionable things, including when he refers to Jane as “low-key Korean,” when she’s of Japanese heritage.

According to John, however, their problem has less to do with him bonding with other men and more with how Jane stepped in to finish the mission. She got bored of waiting for John, so she killed the targets with her sniper gun.

After the therapist tells them a bizarre story about monkeys in the Costa Rican jungle, she ends the session. But she doesn’t let them leave without reminding them a few times about her Venmo code.

By the following week, the relationship between the couple is even more strained. Using thinly veiled software-coded language, John and Jane explain their most recent conflict.

While chasing a target, John fell behind due to his asthma, so Jane got stuck fighting the guy in the lift. As John was running up the stairs to catch up, Jane ended up on the roof. Before throwing the target off the building, she said, “Die mo*********r!” John found her use of a “catchphrase” hilarious. However, Jane was less than impressed about her partner laughing at her.

The therapist tells John off for playing the piano that saved her grandparents’ lives back in WW2 before suggesting the two practice taking “time off” whenever they struggle to see eye to eye. On their way out, Jane concludes that the therapist must like John more than her.

When the third session starts, John and Jane aren’t even sitting next to each other, so something pretty bad must have happened between them. The two got lost in the woods for a couple of days while on a mission to get a target who was a hunter. John loves the great outdoors, Jane not so much. Things come to a head when Jane realizes her partner lied about having read The Prophet back in episode 1. He only claimed it was his favorite book to impress Jane because he didn’t like watching her flirt with the Hot Neighbor.

The argument devolves to the point where Jane again makes fun of John for his unusually close relationship with his mother. It turns out he calls her five times a day. In retaliation, John accuses Jane of not having any feelings and berates her for not being in touch with her widowed father. Even worse, the mission ends with yet another failure.

After hearing about the argument, the therapist suggests the two stop working together. Of course, Sarah Paulson has no idea John and Jane are spies working a very dangerous job. But John does agree with trying to take on separate projects for a while.

How does Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 6 end?

Before their session ends, the therapist gives them the month’s recordings. To John and Jane’s shock, the therapist has cameras and microphones all around her house. After John and Jane walk out of the office, the therapist pulls out her vape and tries to relax. Unfortunately, she gets little time to do so as John and Jane set her beloved home on fire.
