2016 psychological chiller A Cure for Wellness starred Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth, and Jason Issacs, in Gore Verbinski’s trippy and convoluted thriller that finds a young business executive who is sent to a mysterious health spa and retreat in the Swiss Alps and has not been seen since. If you are a fan of this twisted and psychologically disturbing story, here are ten recommendations for physical horror movies like A Cure For Wellness that you should also watch.

The Ward  (2010)

Here is a little-known shocker directed by A-list horror creator John Carpenter, starring Amber Heard as Kristen who has been apprehended and placed in the North Bend Psychiatric Hospital after burning down a farmhouse. It’s not long before mysterious and ghostly apparitions start to appear.

Awake (2007)

More horrific intentions become apparent in this fear-inducing hospital-based thriller starring Hayden Christensen as the poor patient awaiting heart surgery that could end up in tragedy, as he learns that the team operating on him plans to kill him during the procedure.

Stonehearst Asylum ( 2014)

Similar in tone to A Cure for Wellness, this shocker sees a Harvard Medical School graduate taking a position at a mental institution and becoming obsessed with a female patient with severe mental issues, discovering some inhumane treatments that are happening there.

Shutter Island (2010)

The claustrophobic and twisted Shutter Island is directed by Martin Scorsese and follows the story of Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals who arrive at an asylum on a remote island investigating the disappearance of a patient. However, things start to spiral out of control as the awful truth about the story is revealed.

Session 9 (2001)

A team of antagonistic workers arrive at an abandoned asylum, charged with removing the asbestos from the building, in this underrated and truly haunting tale. The scares come from the tone and the oppressive cinematography, and this is a disturbing descent into madness and murder.

Angel Heart (1987)

Mickey Rourke is private detective Harry Angel in this cult classic, which sees him employed by the devilish Robert DeNiro to investigate the disappearance of old-time crooner Johnny Favourite. Rourke is mesmerizing, and director Alan Parker creates a dream-like atmosphere that leads to a shattering conclusion.

Apostle (2018)

Written and directed by Gareth Evans, Apostle is another little-known entry on our list and follows the story of another poor soul who finds himself in a secluded and mysterious location, trying this time to save his own sister. However, a deadly cult has some other ideas.

Thelma (2017)

While studying at a university in Oslo, giving this entry a similar backdrop to A Cure for Wellness, a young student starts to have seizures that may be the result of supernatural powers.

Errors of the Human Body (2012)

With a basis in medical science, this thriller follows Dr Geoff Burton, becoming part of the staff at the respected Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany. However, progress in a human regeneration gene leads to an escalation of personal trauma and lapses of judgment resulting in the birth of a horrific virus that threatens everything.
