Summary
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is a beautifully animated series with strong voice performances, but the writing falls short with redundant jokes leading it to overstay its welcome.
The intergalactic world is dealing with many issues, and Doctors Sleech and Klak are at the forefront of helping them overcome these issues in Season 1 of the Prime Video series The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy. Regardless of the cases they take on, Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak use their uncharacteristic decision-making to ensure the safety of those around them.
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy follows best friends and surgeons Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak as they tackle time loops, STIs, and anxiety-eating parasites. Each case the duo takes on is hazardous and jeopardizes existence.
Within the first episode, we follow Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak as they attempt to cure anxiety. The case begins to take a toll on the doctors, leading to them trying something that might cause them to lose their licenses. Although things never truly come to fruition, when Klak was inside the woman’s brain, a worm attached itself to her, and Sleech was able to save it.
Each episode of the show represents different cases that Sleech and Klak take on, with some individual aspects that carry over to other episodes. However, one vital part of the series to follow is the worm Sleech saved, because it carries through the following episodes into the finale.
The true highlight of this series comes from an absolutely stunning color palette created by the animation team. The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy might have some similar beats with the outlandish plot, but what made it stand out the most was its beauty and how the visuals truly pop. Its vibrancy stands out in balancing the hilarity and the darkness of the show. I can’t rave enough about the work of this entire team.
Stephanie Hsu and Keke Palmer are hilarious together as Sleech and Klak. They share this electric chemistry within a twisted world that ensures the over-the-top aspects of the script are delivered to make us laugh. I have some complaints about the script, but these two made up for it with their voice work.
Look, I’ll be first to admit that shows like Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites aren’t exactly shows I go out of my way to watch. The humor can be funny at times, but it can also become repetitive and overbearing. Sometimes, it felt like they were beating us over the head with some of the same jokes, and keeping my interest was often challenging.
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy will have an audience, I am sure of it, and if the shows I mentioned earlier are in your wheelhouse, then you will surely love this. Personally, the beautiful animation and voice work of the cast kept me interested enough to warrant a recommendation, but don’t go out of your way if the trailer wasn’t up your alley.
