Obliteratedfrom Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, has been canceled by Netflix and will not return for Season 2. Luckily, the news will not affect the ongoing work on the latest season of Cobra Kai, but fans of the action-thriller series may be disappointed by the news that this latest project got the axe.

Obliterated Has Been Canceled; Will Not Return for Season 2

Obliterated has officially been canceled and will not return to Netflix for Season 2. The news was first reported by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, and was subsequently picked up by respected Netflix news outlet What’s On Netflix.

The series was originally intended for TBS but landed on Netflix in 2022 when the network announced it was cutting back on scripted content. It’s likely the existing relationship between the creators and Netflix factored into this deal, but it turns out to have been a bad one, since Obliterated performed significantly worse than Cobra Kai.

How has Obliterated performed?

Obliterated has not done especially well with viewers, and this could well factor into it being canceled. Netflix Top 10 has seen watch hours steadily decrease since the show’s release. Even at its peak, it lagged behind other high-profile originals competing in the same category. Given that the show is expensive to produce, these numbers don’t bode well for its future.

The same could be said about the critical reception. While audience approval has given the show a 6.7 rating on IMDb and a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ score on that same site is much less positive, with a disappointing 45% and a Rotten distinction.

What is Obliterated about?

Obliterated follows the story of an elite special forces team that takes down a deadly bomb threat to the city of Las Vegas. The team takes to the town to party, but one of the team members finds out that the bomb is a fake. With each member filled with alcohol or drugs, they must hunt down the real bomb to save the world.

The story of Obliterated isn’t something that is any different in the dramedy aspect of shows. You have this cast of characters each with their own personal demons that use their job to take out that frustration. Along the way they face internal conflict that forces them to possibly zig instead of zag.

Where the series gets fun is when creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald take all the good from their time in Cobra Kai and kick it up a notch. While we have some awesome fight sequences, it’s when they bring in the over-the-top action that makes this series feel like a movie.
