As ever, Netflix is leading the charge on salacious true-crime stories that snatch the interest of genre fans and ignite that innate anger about injustice. And there are few bigger injustices than the fate of Michelle Hadley, who became a victim of her ex-fiancé, Ian Diaz, and his wife Angela. As depicted in A Toxic Love Story, Ian and Angela masterminded a campaign that landed Michelle in jail for 88 days on entirely false pretences in one of California’s biggest miscarriages of justice.
With the story now back in the public eye and under fresh scrutiny, viewers are being exposed to the case for perhaps the first time. And they might well be wondering what the ultimate fates of Ian and Angela Diaz were after engineering Michelle’s wrongful arrest. Well, we’re here to help fill in some of the blanks.
Who Are Ian and Michelle Diaz?
Ian Diaz was a U.S. Deputy Marshal based in Southern California who was engaged to Michelle Hadley. After the breakdown of their relationship, he met and married Angela, with whom he would concoct a terrible scheme framing Michelle as an obsessive ex who was stalking them.
To accomplish this, they created dozens of fake email addresses and burner accounts, creating a years-long paper trail to form the bedrock of their claims that a religious-themed address called “Lilith is Truth” was really Michelle in disguise. They posted “rape fantasy” ads on Craigslist claiming that Angela wanted men to visit Ian’s condo and force themselves on her as part of a sexual fantasy, implying that Michelle was responsible. This is primarily what led to her wrongful arrest and 88-day imprisonment.
It wasn’t until digital forensics traced the IP addresses back to Ian and Angela’s devices – you’d think he might have foreseen this, as a deputy Marshal? – that police realised Michelle had been innocent all along.
What Was the Motive?
It isn’t entirely clear who did what between Ian and Angela. The most likely theory is that Ian was a control freak – his relationship with Michelle had originally broken down on this basis – and he was seeking revenge for having been spurned. Apparently, during their relationship, Ian would watch Michelle on cameras in the property, and constantly call her when she was out of his sight.
Unable to control Michelle, Ian seems to have cooked up a way to do so with Angela as a willing participant. Since neither is exactly a reliable witness, the exact details about whose idea the whole thing was remain unclear. Ian has said that he thinks Angela did it all, despite it being Ian with the more concrete motive for going after Michelle. Either way, neither of them seems to have shown a great deal of remorse for what occurred.
Was Justice Done?
In 2023, Ian Diaz was convicted in federal court of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury, and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to ten years and one month in federal prison.
Angela Diaz was arrested in 2017 and, that same year, pleaded guilty to kidnapping, false imprisonment, forgery, and falsely reporting crimes. She was sentenced to five years in prison.
Following his conviction, Ian Diaz appealed, citing errors during the trial, but in January 2025, his case was rejected by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and all of his convictions were upheld.
Where Are Ian and Angela Diaz Now?
Ian Diaz remains in federal prison serving his ten-year sentence. Given the outcome of his appeal, it’s very likely he’ll remain there for quite some time, after the lengthy federal investigation meant that he was only convicted in 2023.
Angela, meanwhile, completed her full sentence and was released on parole. She was granted 342 days of pre-sentence credit for time served while awaiting her sentencing, so she was incarcerated on January 8, 2018, and walked free – more or less – on July 19, 2020. She now lives in another state, though her exact whereabouts are unknown.
Angela also declined to participate in A Toxic Love Story. I think we can probably imagine why.
