The Swedish Netflix series Young Royals is over and will not return Season 4. Fans are wondering why the decision to end the series came about ahead of the Season 3 finale, and many feel that there was more mileage in the premise. What happened?
Why is Young Royal Season 4 Not Happening?
It is always a sad time for fans when their favorite show is canceled, and there was a bit of an outcry from the fan base of Young Royals when the news dropped that Season 3 would be the last. However, the situation would become more understandable when word came down from the co-creator or the show itself.
Lisa Ambjörn made it clear that the plan from the beginning was to make it to a third season, giving the story a beginning, middle, and end. An interview with Gay Times would reveal Ambjorn’s vision: “I’ve always imagined Young Royals being told in three parts, and because of the fans’ dedication to our story, we get to tell the last one.”
There was always a plan that the show would conclude in a way the creators saw fit, and despite it being an emotional decision to make, it is important to understand the creator’s choice for their work. Ambjorn would go on to confirm her plans by saying, “Because one thing I did know in 2019 was how it all was gonna end. And now my friends, it’s coming. This season is the last one.”
Although the show may have sailed under the radar of many viewers, there is no denying the success and popularity within its fan base. The teen drama knew exactly who its audience was, and played to them confidently. The casting and storylines were easy to invest in and the the drama would consistently ramp upwards as things progressed.
Season 3 hopes to keep the momentum of the previous two seasons going. According to Netflix Top 10, Season 1 made it to the top 10 in 12 countries and racked up a nice 9.8 million hours globally. It was the 8th most streamed non-English language show on Netflix. By Season 2, fans were ready for more, and word had spread about the show, resulting in it making the top 10 in 26 countries, and being streamed more than 18 million hours in the first week. During this week, the second season was ranked the 3rd most streamed non-English language series on Netflix worldwide.
The showrunners will be hoping for another successful run, but regardless of the numbers, Season 3 will be the last we see of the show.
The first season of Young Royals has six episodes, Season 2 also has six, and Season 3 will also have six, making eighteen in total. Each episode comes in at around the forty-five-minute mark, but some are longer, stretching to fifty-six minutes.
The first season dropped in July 2021, Season 2 appeared in November 2022, and Season 3 debuted on March 11th, 2024.
