Summary

What an anti-climactic ending to an overwritten drama that only attempts to set up a second season. 3 Body Problem suffers drastically from trying to be too smart.

The United Nations announces a new project named the Wallfacer and introduces the three people who will be in charge of the project in Episode 8 of 3 Body ProblemWade and his team are heading to the port to launch Will’s brains into space to begin the Staircase Project and take down the San-ti. Season 1 comes to a very unsatisfactory ending here, only really attempting to set up Season 2 and suffering mightily for trying to be too smart for its own good.

Who dies in “Wallfacer”?

The episode begins with Saul having a one-night stand and the woman getting upset because he doesn’t remember her name. As he takes her to her Uber, someone on a skateboard zooms by Saul, knocking him over, which leads to a chain of events that sees the girl he slept with get hit by a car and killed

Da Shi brings Saul in for a bit of questioning, but not about the death of the girl — about Dr. Wenjie and how he was the last person who saw her before she was murdered, along with Da Shi’s detective in China. Although he thought it was an accident, the car that hit the girl was autonomous and self-driving, and Da Shi thinks it tried to kill him.

Because of what happened, Da Shi took Saul to the United Nations, where he attended the fourth meeting of the Planetary Defense Council. The woman says they are set to announce the Wallfacer Project. She says the San-ti can do many things, but they cannot read minds.

Who are the three Wallfacers?

The group has chosen three people to formulate and direct strategic plans. They come up with the plans in their head and do not share them until the timing is right. The first Wallfacer was General Hou Bolin, the second was Professor Lelya Arc, and the last was Saul Durand. Saul refuses to partake as a Wallfacer, and regardless of being told it could be dangerous for him to go outside, he does and ends up getting shot.

Saul continues to tell everyone he rejected the offer and demands to see the Secretary-General. She explains that it doesn’t matter whether or not he accepted the offer or not, the San-ti might not believe it, putting his life in jeopardy. No matter what he says, nobody cares to listen, so he demands that he see Will’s brain sent off to space.

Does Will’s brain make it to space?

Saul arrives to stand alongside Jin as they watch Will be sent off to space. The probe continues up each flight of stairs in space, and it is very successful. However, along the way, it gets caught on something, which results in the mission being a failure. Jin watches as Will’s brain is ultimately taken for nothing.

How does 3 Body Problem Season 1 end?

On his flight back from the failed project, the San-ti reaches out to Wade on the plane to say they are disappointed in his project’s failure. She informs Wade that there will be a place for him when they arrive, as he is part of their plan. They tell him they will be with him every step of the way until the day he dies.

Da Shi brings Saul and Jin to a beach area where he shows them thousands of cicadas flying around. He says people hate bugs and have been trying to eliminate them forever. They’ve done everything they could to destroy them and they aren’t going anywhere. This entire thing was a pun on the San-ti calling humans bugs. Da Shi ends by saying they have work to do.
