Summary
Finally, we are starting to connect some dots that lead to structured storytelling. However, the show’s pacing is very slow. “Destroyer of Worlds” is a step up from the previous two episodes, but not by much.
Jack and Jin begin to play the game together, which leads them to get some answers in Episode 3 of 3 Body Problem. Although Auggie pleaded with Jack and Jin not to play the game because Dr. Vera was playing it before she died, the duo starts to unpack some serious answers that reveal what is behind the entire game. Season 1 finally feels like it’s beginning to connect some dots here.
Who dies in “Destroyer of Worlds”?
Da Shi arrives at the European Council for Nuclear Research in Switzerland, where Dr. Schmidt became the 32nd scientist in the last few months. Inside Dr. Schmidt’s safe, Shi finds the infamous gold helmet he had been trying to find.
The group is gathered to talk about the latest suicide when Auggie excuses herself. Auggie wanders into Jack’s bedroom and finds the gold mask. She puts it on, and the lady chops her head off. We see her storm downstairs to confront Jack and Jin, pleading with them to stop playing the game. However, the two don’t listen and play the game with one another to figure out what they are to do within it.
Da Shi brings the gold mask to his boss, Thomas, to discuss what they should do with it. Engineering discovered that the game has a retinal scanner, an oxygen meter, and a brain wave sensor. Thomas thinks it’s a recruitment tool, going after their best and brightest.
Auggie meets with one of her bosses, who asks why she is putting the brakes on her project. She tries to explain that it’s only temporary, and he says hundreds of employees and billions can benefit from her work. He explains that he doesn’t want to be harsh, but they sponsor her ILR, and she can’t stay in a country on a work visa if she isn’t working. She starts the project back up in her lab, but the countdown arrives again.
Jin and Jack head back into the game for level 3, where they meet some fellow players. We meet Sir Isaac Newton and Professor Turing, who developed a science called calculus to predict the movement of the sun. The calculations are set to be performed by the Human Abacus.
What is the true purpose of the game?
Newton and Turing calculate eight months and three days, which they believe to be correct. Jin stands up, saying it is wrong, and moments after Great Kahn sentences them to death, Jin points out the calculation is incorrect. This leads to the heat from the sun killing all of Kahn’s soldiers. Jin realizes the point of the game is not to solve the three-body problem but to save the people.
A man watches as the people play the games. He sees how Jin and Jack are playing so well and informs Mike Evans, who tells him to get them vetted for the London summit. Evans speaks to an audio box that he calls Lord. The lady says the lack of fear leads to extinction and humanity must learn to fear again. He says we will teach them.
How does 3 Body Problem Season 1 Episode 3 end?
Tatiana, who met with Auggie, is sitting down with Jin and Jack to say that their scores have been out of this world. She tells them every question they may have will be answered in Level 4. The duo discovers that the people they have been playing with in this game are called the San-ti and are coming from an unstable three-body star system. The aliens have created the game system to attempt to go to Earth.
Jack thought the entire thing was a scam, so he left Jin to fend for herself. He returns home to none of his electronics working. Tatiana walks into the room and asks who he is trying to contact. Jack tells her to leave, but she throws him against the glass, stabs him in the neck, and leaves him for dead.
