Summary

The murder of Reena Virk becomes much more complicated in Episode 3 of Under the Bridge, with several characters emerging as potential suspects.

Josephine Bell is deeply and probably irredeemably awful, but she might also be very unlucky. In Episode 2 of Under the Bridge, she confessed to murdering Reena Virk. Here in Episode 3, it’s revealed she was lying; she was just trying to impress Becca enough to facilitate an introduction to John Gotti.

But Jo confessed moments before Reena’s dead body was discovered. A fanciful lie to make her sound dangerous suddenly became a legitimate confession to a murder, it turns out, she hasn’t committed. She was complicit, sure, but Jo has an alibi. And if she didn’t murder Reena, then who did?

This is the big dramatic question of “Blood Oath”, which quickly makes Reena’s killing much more complicated than it first appeared.

Identifying Reena’s Body

As it tends to in small towns, the news of Reena’s death is everywhere. Cam feels vindicated. Becca is shocked by what she assumes to be the truth of what she knows. Reena’s family is devastated, and the girls at the group home, most of whom were complicit in the first attack on Reena if not the second, fatal one, are petrified.

The reaction of Reena’s parents, father Manjit and mother Suman, becomes a clue and opens another sordid door in the case. Manjit is too torn up to go and identify Reena’s body, so Suman volunteers herself, which later rings alarm bells with Cam’s father, who instructs her brother to start looking into Manjit.

It’s probably just as well that Manjit didn’t see his daughter in that state. Suman ends up fondling the cigarette burn between Reena’s eyes, intended as a cruel mockery of a bindi, in abject horror.

Jo Did Not Kill Reena

Cam, at least, does the right thing – she heads straight to Cam and tells her what Jo had said. But it doesn’t help since Cam has already confirmed Jo’s alibi. She was back at Seven Oaks for the midnight curfew, and Reena was last seen alive at 11:47 pm. It couldn’t have been Jo.

Episode 3 also cracks a window into the past. We know that Becca is still mourning the loss of her brother and that something about Reena’s murder reminds her of his death, which is why she’s so adamant about inserting herself into the investigation. We also see how the Crip Mafia Cartel formed, with Jo, Dusty, Kelly, and importantly Reena all watching Warren get beat half to death as part of an all-boys gang initiation. Jo, envious that she can’t be included, pitches the idea of forming their own gang, and the episode’s title, “Blood Oath”, is what the girls make to secure their place in it.

Reena, though, is not included. She has to prove herself first.

Warren Is Guilty

About Warren. He gets quite a lot of screen time in this episode, though we don’t know much about him beyond the increasingly obvious fact that he was involved in the attack on Reena at best and personally murdered her at worst. He washes his bloody clothes at his girlfriend’s house and reveals to Becca that his family has basically abandoned him.

At the end of the episode, Warren also confesses to his girlfriend through the medium of song that he 187’d – in other words, murdered – Reena, so that’s quite the smoking gun.

Family Affair

Elsewhere, Becca and Cam resume – I’m guessing; that’s the vibe – a sexual relationship that I’m pretty sure will become ill-advised sooner rather than later. But Cam has bigger fish to fry.

Following the nudge from their father, Cam’s brother stops by her desk with the news that Manjit has a record that was subsequently wiped just before Reena died. He was accused of assaulting her. This makes him a suspect by default, even if the nature of the accusation remains unclear for now.

Kelly Has Reena’s Boots

At the end of the episode, the Seven Oaks girls are getting ready for a school dance when Jo discovers Reena’s bloody boots in Kelly’s closet. Kelly, who had already expressed some psychopathic ideas about cutting off heads like members of a cartel when the CMC was formed earlier, purrs, “I did it for you.”

Did what? Did she kill Reena? Or did she just hide some of the evidence, believing Jo did? And how is Warren involved?

Questions, questions. Things are started to liven up.
