Summary
The murder plot concludes in the penultimate episode of Miss Night and Day, but there are still some things to resolve in the finale.
Episode 15 is the penultimate outing of Miss Night and Day, and you can tell. The stakes were already pretty high at the end of Episode 14, so this chapter had a good excuse to hit the ground running.
With only the finale to go, the emotional gut-punches are starting to pile up, the reveals are coming thick and fast, and the end is certainly in sight.
Let’s break it down.
Na Ok-Hui Is Arrested
The previous episode ended with Mi-jin having just been knocked out by Ok-Hui after she used her father as bait. In short order, Mi-jin is able to free herself from captivity and flee. Luckily, she had informed Ga-yeong earlier to call the cops if Mi-jin is unreachable; she gets Ji-woong on the case instead.
Thanks to a distraction afforded by Ok-hui’s unstable headspace, Mi-jin is able to dose her with her own fentanyl and leave her for the authorities. But Mi-jin is hurt in the process and lost in the woods by the time Ji-woong arrives.
Luckily, the mysterious cat leads Ji-woong all the way to Mi-jin, and she’s hospitalized. Bodies are dug up in the area, including Ji-woong’s mother and the real Lim Sun. Cue the first emotional gut punch, especially for Ji-woong, whose hopes of one day reuniting with his mother are painfully dashed.
The Details
Much of the rest of the episode is about the fallout from these events, but it also includes some explanation of what actually happened to Ji-woong’s mother and Lim Sun.
Lim Sun had originally caught Ok-hui stealing and impersonating people. Ji-woong’s mother had been a witness and had tried to intervene. It’s a sad, relatively simple story. To some extent, you’d imagine that the pointlessness of the deaths would make them even harder to deal with for Ji-woong and Mi-jin.
And this does seem to be the case. It certainly causes problems between them, with Mi-jin nursing a lot of guilt especially. The situation is complicated further by the revelation of Mi-jin’s body-switching power.
The Inevitable Break-Up
With her secret out, Mi-jin tells Ji-woong that they should break up. The guilt is weighing on her and she believes she should take responsibility for it without dragging him down with her.
This is classic romantic K-Drama business and virtually guarantees a happy ending in which they both end up together, so look out for that in the finale.
Mi-Jin’s Secret Is Out… And Some Unresolved Issues Remain
Along with Ji-woong discovering Mi-jin’s secret, so too do her parents at the end of Miss Night and Day Episode 15. At this late stage, how will that change things between them? Probably not very much, if we’re being honest.
With the murder plot wrapped up and the body-swap secret out, this leaves the finale with a couple of obvious but important remaining tasks. Everyone needs to come to terms with how Mi-jin has been changing into Lim Sun, but more to the point, we still need to understand a) why she was turning into her aunt in the first place, b) why she is continuing to embody Lim Sun for an increasingly long time, and c) what the cat has to do with everything.
I should be clear that I haven’t loved any of the show’s fantastical elements, or more accurately I haven’t loved the mechanics of them. Switching between two identities is fine as a concept, but the cat stuff is a bit silly, and the show has taken some liberties with timing and such to ensure that Mi-jin/Lim Sun is always on the cusp of discovery.
With the truth out, hopefully, the finale really hones in on the details to provide a satisfying payoff for all of the show’s drama.
