Summary

Our Little Secret ultimately feels more like a festive flop than holiday cheer, failing to bring the magic of Xmas.

It’s November 24th, 4° outside, and it seems the perfect time to watch a Christmas movie. As I get my sweet cup of tea, a toasty hot water bottle, and my snuggly duvet, I turn to Netflix for their festive romance movie, Our Little Secret, starring Lindsay Lohan and Ian Harding.

I first thought, “Was it really necessary to start a festive movie with so much heartbreak and sadness?” I understand they may be aiming for dramatic effect; however, this does spark a negative festive spirit immediately—BIG THUMBS DOWN.

As for the plot, we have the main two characters, Avery (Lohan) and Logan (Harding). They spent their childhood together—they were inseparable. This friendship blossomed into a beautiful relationship—until Avery is offered a job in London and takes it. Logan, in a desperate attempt to keep Avery, proposes to her. Avery says NO!

THEY BREAK UP…

Now, I will admit, the transition of showing the next 10 years of their life is SUPER COOL. A montage of all the top headlines of the past 10 years plays. However, it is corrupted slightly by the intensely loud music playing over the top – a bit unnecessary and stunting the creative idea.

Anyway, moving on…

Avery and Logan find themselves in new relationships on their way to their partner’s parents’ house for Christmas. In very likely circumstances, they arrive at the same family home. How incredibly predictable and uncreative.

As the story progresses, the movie’s aim is clearly to bring Avery and Logan back together. I would’ve hoped that Netflix movies in the modern era would find new, fun, creative concepts for Christmas movies.

If you’re looking for a plain, boring, and non-inspired film, choose Our Little Secret. But if you want to enjoy a memorable Christmas Movie, stick with the classics or even 2022’s The Noel Diary, a beautiful Christmas movie.

The ONE exciting moment of the movie I didn’t expect and found quite funny was the part where ALL the family secrets came out over Secret Santa. That was a bit manic and funny—it reminds me of Friends Season 7, Episode 4, where Monica, Chandler, and Ross start spouting out one another’s secrets to win the competition of embarrassing each other.

And you may call me a b-i-t-c-h, but this movie also feels too youthful for Lindsay Lohan. It’s time for her to participate in the more elegant and charming hallmark Christmas movies. You know the kind I mean. The cheesy but never-gets-old love story. Both parties are old and settled, finding love and companionship in an old friend.

Lastly, I think what I hated most about this movie was the scene of Avery being entirely and utterly stoned during a Christmas Church service. It feels disrespectful and distasteful. The concept may have sounded funny, amusing, and unique to the writers, but admittedly, I found it to have the complete opposite effect.

And don’t get me started on the aftermath of the Priest stating that the inaccurate depiction of Jesus’ birth was BETTER than the traditional story. As a follower of Jesus myself, I can appreciate humor and comedy, but this misses the mark by a landslide… Yada yada yada, of course, they end up together. What else is there to really say?
