Virgin River Season 6, Episode 6, deep-dives into exes. After the opening season’s chaos, the excitement and drama have slowed, and I don’t believe this to be good.

By the end of this episode, the writers are trying to build more tension, but I think they are failing. This season, the episodes peaked too early despite the excitement of the wedding.

MURIEL AND CAMERON

We start off the Ghosts of Virgin Rivers past with Cameron. He’s on his way to Virgin River for the Wedding of Mel and Jack (a little bit bizarre if you ask me.) Nonetheless, he first stops by Doc’s practice to say hello. And what a wonderful surprise it is for Doc and Muriel, who walks in on them mid-greeting.

Muriel and Cameron’s conversation is interrupted by a phone call. The phone call no one ever wants to receive. Sadly, she opens up to Cameron and tells him what the phone call was: “I have breast cancer,” she tells Cameron.

He offers her space and privacy, but she asks him to stay with her, teasing a resolution between them.

JACK AND MANDY

Jack and Mel head off to get their marriage license four days before the wedding. It is so formal yet still exciting for married couples. However, Jack and Mel’s plan to get their license meets a bump in the road.

The lady at administration informs Jack that he needs the paper trail of his divorce from his young relationship.

This leads him to visit a ghost from his past—his ex-wife, Mandy. She has the papers he needs. It’s been 30 years since they last saw each other. What will come of their meeting?

The answer is a bittersweet meeting. They talk about their divorce—a harsh yet humble reality.

Mandy has a gift for Jack: a marine badge and a letter praising him for his service. As expected, Jack doesn’t think much of the letter expressing his service, though he has sentimental feelings about the badge.

HOPE AND HER EX-HUSBAND

Since the start of the series, we’ve come to know and love Sugar (currently Jack and Mel’s beautiful horse). But Sugar needs a proper home, and Jack and Mel need the barn to be free for their wedding day.

So Hope has to visit her ghost: her ex-husband, who has the best farm in Virgin River. The meeting is hostile, but eventually, he accepts Sugar!

What is beautiful about this scene is that Hope steps up and does the last thing she ever wanted to do: to make Jack and Mel happy.

CALVIN AND CHARMAINE

As the episode comes to a close, a storm starts brewing—a signal for trouble. Jack leads Sugar into the barn to protect her from the storm. While inside, Mel is babysitting Charmaine’s sons.

As Jack is with Sugar in the barn, a car pulls up. Bright headlights beam straight into the barn. Jack walks out to investigate. Calvin walks out of the light. And as we can expect, Calvin came to deliver Mel, Jack, and anyone else who gets in the way of his sons a threat.

Jack doesn’t cower to that coward.
