Summary
Alice and Steve throws in some legitimate peril for good measure in a finale that refuses to tie up any loose ends. A big cliffhanger implies a second season.
While Alice and Steve doesn’t seem like the kind of show that would necessarily need a second season, the ending of Season 1 makes a continuation all but inevitable. With none of the storylines – including the most central one – tied up, none of the relationships repaired, and a major cliffhanger leaving the fate of the main characters unknown, Episode 6 bows out with an assurance that we probably haven’t seen the last of all this, especially if it ends up being a hit for Disney.
While the plot revolves around a major fallout between the titular characters after Steve begins a relationship with Alice’s 26-year-old daughter, Izzy, the finale finds almost every character in personal dire straits. Izzy is pregnant, though not with Steve’s baby; Alice and Steve have ruined each other’s careers and still haven’t patched things up, Alice’s marriage to Daniel is barely hanging on, and Dom’s own sexual awakening takes a fiery turn. On top of all that, Alice and Steve might be dead. It’s a little hard to tell.
Steve and Izzy’s Wedding Is a Disaster
Across the six episodes of Season 1, Steve and Izzy’s relationship has moved remarkably quickly. As of the finale, she’s pregnant, albeit with her ex’s baby. Steve, though, following Daniel’s example, has decided to raise the child as his own so he can stay with Izzy, and in a rather traditional step, he has decided they should get married on fast-forward.
On account of this, the finale is built around the wedding rehearsal at a swanky rural property, but tensions are extremely high, especially with the entire extended family present. The highlight is a dinner scene that wouldn’t feel out of place in something like The White Lotus, with Alice, refusing to play along, dropping the bombshell that Steve is Izzy’s father.
This isn’t true, obviously – outright incest would be a step too far, even for a show that’s playing in murky waters – but it gives everyone pause, and Alice thinks it validates her position that everyone thought, even for a moment, that Steve could be Izzy’s father. This is perhaps why she keeps pointing a loaded shotgun at Steve, though she makes sure to turn it away whenever anyone but him looks.
Even Izzy is having second thoughts. The disarray the relationship is causing is burdensome; Steve’s hyper-focus on Alice potentially trying to kill him is leading him to neglect Izzy, and she’s still not entirely over her ex, who turns up at the rehearsal after misinterpreting a text she sent him notifying him of the nuptials as a covert request to intervene (which, to be fair, it might have been).
Up In Smoke
The only person who seems to be faring quite well in Alice and Steve Episode 6 is Dom, whose relationship with Rome is flourishing. When they finally decide to make good on all their chemistry, though, they knock over a candle, setting the entire building alight.
Dom and Rome sound the alarm, and everyone is able to get out of the building safely. Everyone, that is, except Steve, who’s listening to music alone in his room (Izzy was with the ex, which in itself isn’t a good sign for the longevity of their marriage). Despite the urgency of the fire having allowed Alice to patch things up with Izzy, when she realises that Steve is still inside, she nonetheless elects to rush back in and save him.
In a funny nod to The Shining, Alice breaks down Steve’s door with an axe, but the two of them find themselves trapped in the building. They make their way to the roof, but there’s no easy way down. The only option is to make a death-defying leap to a nearby parapet. With their lives hanging in the balance, Alice and Steve finally reconcile and express their love for one another, before running hand-in-hand to the end of the roof and making the jump that’ll either kill or save them both.
Season 2, Anyone?
Alice and Steve ends on this shot, not clarifying whether Alice and Steve survive the leap. Even if they do, there’s still plenty more to unpack, which could easily justify a second season if there’s interest.
Even though Alice seems to have reconciled with Steve and Izzy, the heightened emotions caused by the fire mean that she probably won’t feel the same way in ordinary circumstances. She still sees the relationship as the ultimate betrayal, and it’s unlikely she’s going to see it any differently.
This is if the relationship even survives, especially with Izzy clearly not being over her ex, who also happens to be the father of her unborn child. The writing is almost on the wall here, since it’d make complete sense for Season 2 to revolve around Izzy and Steve trying to make a relationship work despite these conflicting circumstances.
And this is to say nothing of Alice’s marriage to Daniel, which is still very much on the rocks, especially given Daniel’s burgeoning relationship with Marni. If Season 2 is the intention – and that very much seems to be the case, based on the cliffhanger ending – then it definitely won’t lack for conflict.
