Widow’s Bay is all anyone seems to be talking about in TV Land these days, and for good reason. The show’s an endlessly enjoyable onion of a story, revealing layer after layer of hidden connections and revelations. The latest development was confirmation that Ruth Livingston is the last living descendant of Richard Warren. Now, it seems that Tom plans to kill her, since doing so will presumably end the curse that currently grips the island. But will it?

Well, as far as fans of the show are concerned, perhaps not. The big theory floating around at the moment is that, despite Rosemary’s claims that she never married or had children, Ruth may have had a secret relationship or kid that nobody knew about. After all, would Miss Widow’s Bay 1959 really have remained single? And if she did, why? Did she have more knowledge about her bloodline than anyone realised?

Speculation is rife on Reddit, with many users thinking along similar lines. One user suggested:

I wonder if Ruth knows. They made a point that she stayed single and didn’t have children, despite being so beautiful. Maybe she’s aware of the curse and purposefully didn’t have children so that it would end with her (though then you’d have to wonder why she didn’t kill herself ages ago).

Or maybe the point is that she actually did have a child, just one that no one knows about (though that would be hard to cover up on an island where she can’t leave).

Given that Rosemary very specifically made the point that Ruth was childless, the likelihood is that she wasn’t, since that’s just the way this show tends to work. It’d also be a useful way to connect some other plot elements, particularly Tom’s wife, Lauren, and his fears that Evan’s fate may be bound up in the island’s curse. Another user thinks that there have already been suggestions in this regard:

This would be a great twist and a clever way to tie everything together, and it would also, as intimated, explain a lot about Ruth’s very specific behaviour, especially in regard to Evan. Given that the key hint to Ruth’s genealogy was the very prominent painting on her office wall, it almost seems a little strange that Ruth wouldn’t know that she was a descendant of Frances Fisher, aka Frances Warren.

If she is aware, this raises a whole host of other problems. If she knew and had a child deliberately to perpetuate the curse, what are the implications of that? If she knew about her bloodline, did she also know that the curse demands periodic sacrifice? Is that why she always leaves the office at the same time? Has Ruth been keeping the island “fed” in order to preserve her secret lineage?

And, if we’re assuming that Lauren was Ruth’s secret daughter, and that she was intimating as much in her letters to Evan, does that mean that Tom might have also put the pieces together and realised that Evan is technically the last surviving Warren descendant? Perhaps the reason he has ventured out into the storm is not to kill Ruth, as he implied, but to confront her about potentially being his wife’s mother and his son’s grandmother.

Of course, this is Widow’s Bay, so there’s a good chance that none of this is true, or all of it is, or the real point is something else entirely. Ruth being the last descendant doesn’t tell us any more about what might be behind the doors, for instance, or explain what all the teeth were about, meaning that the finale still has plenty of work to do when it comes to tying up all the loose ends. However, that seems to be what the show is setting out to do. Either way, we don’t have long to wait to get the answers we’re all craving. And what great fun it has been in the meantime.
