Episode 5 delves into Alma’s (Rosa Salazar) father Jack (Bob Odenkirk). It explores why he researched the ability to span across various timelines. When he was younger, he heard his mother hum a song, and speak to herself, and when on holiday with Alma, an Indigenous tribe member hummed a tune about the Universe — the same tune his mother hummed. Alma’s father was fixed on his theory on the ability to fundamentally change time since this moment. But it does not solve who murdered him.
“Alone in This (You Have Me)” explores Alma’s father’s theory. He links the ability to schizophrenia, highlighting people with that condition have larger ventricles; in other words, bigger brain pockets. When Alma was younger and contracted pneumonia, coupled with her loss of hearing, her father did a scan on the brain, and unsurprisingly, Alma has larger ventricles than the average human as well.
But the central part of the story is Alma dealing with Sam, while her father is on the sidelines trying to get her back on mission. She struggles with the truth about their break-up, bouncing between different timelines of her life, Sam’s life, and their relationship. Alma becomes acutely aware that their upbringings were uncannily identical; they both had family issues, and they were both outsiders. The varying timelines remind Alma that Sam is the only person that understands her, and that makes her feel vulnerable, knowing she loves him because of that fact.
While Sam is repeatedly saying sorry outside the bathroom door, Alma is debating with her father about the mission and questioning her relationship at the same time.
Undone Season 1, Episode 5, “Alone in This (You Have Me)” ends with Alma forgiving Sam for his lies, but the critical moment is when her father advises her not to tell Sam about her newfound abilities. Alma decides to trust Sam and tells him of her mission with her dead father. Despite assuring her he’d believe her, Sam’s understandable reaction was a feeling of confusion — a single tear rolls down Alma’s cheek.
