Nina is on a mission to learn the truth in Episode 6, “The Black Door”. She heads to the police station to discuss Joe Ridgeway’s death. She tells the police that Joe was murdered and plays his panicked voicemail. Police state that all evidence points towards suicide.
I’m still not convinced of Nina as a character. There’s not enough energy here.
Kinsey is also eager to find out the truth regarding her father after seeing the shocking memory. She shows Duncan the memory jar. He claims the memories feel so familiar and then becomes really dizzy. He forgets the jars straight away like nothing happened. Kinsey tells Tyler what happened and she is curious about what happened in the sea cave. Tyler refuses to help, he believes his father was a murderer. Kinsey dismisses that idea.
We are seeing two siblings at odds. One seemingly not ready to face the truth while the other thinks there’s another truth to what they saw. It appears Tyler is too emotionally frustrated after seeing the shocking memory.
At Ridgeway’s school memorial, Nina confronts Ellie and asks why she avoiding her. Outside, Nina asks about the scars forcefully. Ellie says they caused the scars themselves; after their friends died, they used a hot poker to the chest — it was a private, intimate thing. Nina presses further, asking Ellie where she was the night Joe died.
Ellie provides no truthful answers. The police once again suggest Joe committed suicide. The anniversary of his wife’s death was approaching.
As we near the end, Scot delivers the Savinas updates on the short film based on Kinsey’s ideas. To enhance the film further, Kinsey suggests they go to the sea cave. It’s obvious at this point that Kinsey is putting her friends in danger for a selfish cause. When they arrive at the cave, Kinsey wants to go deeper into the tunnels. While the others explore, Kinsey finds a large blue illuminated door shaped like a keyhole. Meanwhile, the tide is coming in putting the entire crew at risk. They have to leave the film equipment behind. The group only just escape with Kinsey agreeing to leave at the last minute with Gabe saving her.
Scot is angry at Kinsey, wondering if she cared about the film. Kinsey states she had more important matters to care about than a “stupid film”.
Gabe asks Kinsey what the large door was in the sea cave. Kinsey thanks Gabe for saving her and regrets taking everyone to the cave. Gabe excitedly tells Kinsey that the mission excited him and explains how much he admires her. Gabe and Kinsey kiss.
Kinsey is becoming more random and wild like her brother the more their father’s memories affect them.
Tyler heads to a party rather than do the sponsored 5k as he promised Jackie. He’s dwindling out of control, drinking copious amounts of alcohol. The Well Lady shows up at the party and asks Tyler for a drink. Jackie shows up and shouts at Tyler. Tyler enters in a conversation of self-pity and Jackie tries to understand what is going on in his head. Tyler tells Jackie that she deserves better.
Locke & Key Season 1, Episode 6, “The Black Door” ends with Tyler walking out the party and The Well Lady approaches him again with a brown bag with alcohol inside. She is clearly manipulating him. Meanwhile, Bode warns Kinsey that the Well Lady is back but Kinsey reassures him that everything is going to be okay. The Well Lady entices Tyler more, inviting him inside a car. Tyler asks what her name is, and she confirms she is called Dodge. Tyler joins her in the car. The last scene is Sam Lesser turning up at the Matheson house.
S**t is about to kick off — hopefully.
Additional Notes:
- At Jackie’s house, Tyler becomes distracted due to his father’s memory.
- Bode finds a new key. He uses the new key. Nothing happens. Nina says it is a missing key and Bode realizes it is not magical.
- The Well Lady turns up and asks Bode to hand over the keys. She warns him again. Sam Lesser uses the key handed to him by the Well Lady to escape prison. He sets the prison on fire.
