The opening of Lucifer season 5, episode 2, “Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!”

Episode 2 opens at a Mars project center. One of the participants is murdered through the night. At the police station, Chloe tells Ella that Lucifer is back and asks her to cut him a bit of slack — as we saw in the last episode, it doesn’t seem to be the actual Lucifer so this makes an interesting chapter.

New investigation and a new Lucifer

Chloe starts her new investigation; biochemist and commander of the Red 2 Mars Project had been murdered — she was called Judy. Ella explains how no-one can leave and enter the dome so it must be one of the crew members. Lucifer enters the crime scene and Ella is angry at him but he gives his excuses. Chloe grabs Lucifer and tells him he lied to Ella and he never lies. Lucifer explains how he was in Hell for thousands of years and that may come with improvements.

Lucifer has changed

Chloe visits Linda and tells her that Lucifer is different now he’s back. Linda explains that it has been a thousand years for him; Chloe raises how Lucifer has reconsidered his position on honesty. Lucifer and Chloe interview the crew members; Chloe seems erred that Lucifer is not doing what he usually does and tries encouraging him. Afterwards, she asks him if he wants to do something impulsive and sinful but he doesn’t seem up to anything. This version of Lucifer did not know how to be Lucifer at all.

Bitter crew member

Lucifer and Chloe do more digging and learn of a bitter engineer who was removed from the Mars project called Donovan. As they move to the next phase of the case, Lucifer tells Chloe that his feelings haven’t changed but he would appreciate more time to adjust. Later, Maze attacks Lucifer and she’s angry he went home without her. She reveals he isn’t Lucifer and Maze suspects that he’s his twin brother Michael.

Twin brother

Michael wants to right the wrongs and he seems jealous of Lucifer’s righteousness of doing the right thing. He believes if he lives Lucifer’s life, his brother will fly right back to Earth. Maze questions his strategy, questioning if he knows how to be Lucifer. Michael believes Maze will not say anything as she wants to get revenge on Lucifer. Maze is right though, Michael has no way of pulling off Lucifer.

Capturing Donovan

Lucifer season 5, episode 2 sees Chloe and Michael continue investigating the murder together despite reservations on whether the real Lucifer is back.

Chloe and Michael find Donovan and chase him in the car. Donovan ends up driving at Chloe with his car and Michael uses his wings to save her. In the interrogation room, Donovan denies killing Judy and reveals that her boss Brody was having an affair with her.

A surprise for Chloe

When Chloe goes to Lucifer’s place, Michael and Maze are hooking up. Chloe leaves the place as she’s upset. Michael tells Chloe that hooking up with Maze meant nothing to her. Chloe tells Michael that she needs to think. But you almost get the sense that Chloe knows what is happening. It seems too easy.

Do your thing

The next day, Chloe and Michael visit Brody; they bring up his affair and state he has a motive. Brody threatens a lawyer and Chloe tells Michael to do his “thing”. He asks Brody “What do you truly fear?” Brody talks about how he hates space. Chloe is starting to suspect there’s more to “Lucifer” and his behavior.

It’s time to have sex

Chloe tells Maze that she understands why she hooked up with Lucifer because she’s hurt and so is he. Chloe declares that she’s going to finally have sex with Lucifer. In the next scene, Chloe keeps trying to seduce him and tells him that sometimes “Change is a good thing”. She offers to go to his place once they have solved the case. Suddenly, Chloe sees their reflection and has a light bulb moment.

An old suit

Chloe asks Ella to look at the reflection on the CCTV. They see someone with an old spacesuit from the Red 1 Mars Project. They enter Sam Chavez’s house and try to arrest him for the murder of Judy. Sam states that Brody killed her but Chloe and Michael aren’t buying it because Sam had access to mission control and he owns a spacesuit from the Red 1 Mars Project.

Sam’s partner Mandy enters the kitchen and confesses to killing Judy; she thought Sam was having an affair with Judy. Sam was trying to expose Brody for the corrupt Mars project. Another case successfully solved — it felt too easy.

I’m going to take Lucifer’s life

Maze confronts Michael and tells him that he cannot continue with this. Michael states he’s going to take Lucifer’s life — he puts Maze in a sleeper hold and knocks her unconscious.

The ending of Lucifer season 5, episode 2, “Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!”

Chloe arrives and tells Michael that she loves him. He tells her he loves her back. Chloe states that once they do this, it will never be the same — Chloe then shoots Michael in the leg and says “Once I shot Lucifer to prove he was the Devil”. She knows he isn’t Lucifer and it was confirmed when she saw him with Maze because Lucifer wouldn’t have done that.

Chloe tells Michael she will never lose faith in her and Lucifer. Michael tells Chloe that she’s a Gift from God and she was never meant to exist — “Father made you for Lucifer”. She says she doesn’t believe him and asks Michael to leave. But you can tell from her facial expression that she was irked by what Michael said.

Michael gets drunk at the club. Amenadiel tells him that he’s terrified that Lucifer is better than him because he’ll always end up winning.

At the end of the episode, Lucifer is told to come back. Episode 2 is a predictable episode but it at least gives a reason for Lucifer to come back.
