The opening

Episode 2 introduces Lily. She narrates how Christmas is the greatest time of the year and that she loves the season. Lily talks about how there are many love stories in her family at Christmas. She’s clearly a hopeless romantic. When she returns home, she learns her parents are going away for Christmas as they “never had a honeymoon”, which dampens her narration.

Episode 2 sells Lily as a dreamer and an idealist who wants the perfect moments that you’d expect from films.

Lily wants romance

This is a setback for Lily who has always had Christmas as her favourite time of the year. She tells her brother Langston that she’s formed a carol singing group. Langston tells her that she doesn’t have to pretend to be jolly. Lily is downbeat that she has no-one for Christmas and then asks about her brother’s new boyfriend.

Langston’s idea

Langston brings the idea of a scavenger hunt so Lily can find romance — a notebook full of clues and hide it at the library. Her notebook is placed and Lily keeps asking for updates on the men that read it from the librarian.

This is how Dash got hold of the notebook.

He detests the Christmas

Lily reads Dash’s message in her notebook. She’s disappointed that he detests Christmas. Lily tells her brother that they have nothing in common. Langston tells her to put the notebook back and see if she can find someone else. While singing in her carol group, she notices the girls from her soccer team — they all have a boyfriend as they walk off. Lily then tries convincing the Christmas carol group to hang out with her but they all have plans.

Episode 2 gives the theme of loneliness at Christmas and how it can feel crippling at the most romantic time of the year.

Meeting Boomer

Lily decides to act on Dash’s message and heads to the pizza store. She leaves the notebook. Boomer finds her and says, “You’re notebook girl”. Lily tells Boomer that he can’t tell Dash who she is. Boomer tells Lily that his friend is complicated but once he lets people in, he’s the most loyal person ever. Boomer agrees to act like he never saw her. Lily tells Boomer that if Dash wants her name, he will have to work for it.

The ending

The scene flits to Dash going to Santa Land. He has to get past the strict elf but Boomer distracts him. Dash approaches Santa and asks for Lily’s name. Santa says it’s on his head and asks Dash to sit on his lap — he wants Dash to promise him that he will not hurt Lily. The elf calls security so Dash steals Santa’s hat. He’s kicked out but he’s got the name — Lily.

Dash leaves a message for Lily and agrees to follow the rules. He asks her what she wants for Christmas. Both characters stay up and listen to Christmas songs while thinking about each other.
