Well, this is certainly a somber chapter. If you’ve ever been in a misunderstood and complicated relationship, then you’ll be able to relate to the scenario facing our lead characters here. As usual, while the romance appears to be core to the story, the life of Ian Chase remains on the sidelines, growing quietly.
You Are My Spring season 1, episode 12 recap
Episode 11 finished in dramatic circumstances, so it’s no surprise that episode 12 starts on lighter terms with friends and acquaintances imagining different scenarios of romance and betrayal between Young-do and Kang Da-jeong, which is an ironic start to the chapter. Young-do did not tell Da-jeong about being hospitalized again. He’s been reinfected with the same virus, and his doctor questions his workaholic lifestyle. He warns him to be careful. Young-do tells his friends that he will be in the hospital for a few days and asks them not to tell Da-jeong.
At the police station, they’ve managed to obtain video footage of Ian Chase collapsing in his bedroom after he drank the whiskey as part of the murder investigation. Noh Hyeon-ju came over, but interestingly, before she did, the mystery man visited the hotel room. Noh Hyeon-ju sees Ian on the floor and then checks out the hidden camera (she knew about the camera in the room). In the footage, she’s stabbed in the neck instantly by the mystery man. Ian Chase is innocent in this case; he didn’t kill Noh Hyeon-ju. The mystery man sets up Ian to make him look like the murderer. The police are instantly on a search for the mystery man.
Ian’s troubles continue as he meets the woman from the conglomerate. The murder of Noh Hyeon-ju does not phase her. She reminds Ian that the chairman’s surgery is coming up (remember, she wants Ian to kill the chairman accidentally). The woman reminds Ian that he’s similar to his brother and then gives him a memory stick from the camera. The dramas continue, as the mystery man is run over by a car soon after, and it is clearly intentional.
News has leaked regarding Ahn Ga-yeong’s relationship with her new partner and the age gap. Rather than admit they are in a romance, she denies it to the media. You can tell her partner is hurt by the constant denial, but Ahn Ga-yeong feels more willing to play the PR game. She raises the constant pressure of keeping up with appearances as a woman, which is making her look cold. The truth is hurting her.
Eventually, Young-do and Da-jeong meet up again for a brief chat. A-ri is annoyed that Young-do is pretending to be not sick, so she tells her the truth. Other friends confirm as she asks more questions. Upset that he never told her, Da-jeong visits Young-do’s hospital room, and he is asleep. While at the hospital, Da-jeong overhears Young-do and Ko Jin-bok talking about his heart transplant and that it causes issues. Young-do also admits that he’s falling for Da-jeong, and he’s not sure if he should see her anymore because his heart is hurting — he doesn’t want her to see him in pain. He confirms he’s going to end things. Da-jeong is devastated at hearing this.
When Da-jeong gets home, she learns that her mother told Young-do not to get sick, and she’s emotional and furious that her mother said that because Young-do doesn’t want to see her now, he’s sick. Once she calms down, her mother hears her pain as Da-jeong explains how Young-do has no one to turn to. She feels she has made a mistake liking him too much as her heart breaks for him. Episode 12 demonstrates how important communication is — something this couple has failed to do.
The ending
Young-do arranges to meet Da-jeong, but he’s wary of creating a painful memory for her. When they meet on the rooftop, Da-jeong feels like a fool. She feels she is the only one hanging on to their relationship and calls him cowardly and irresponsible and that he brazenly assumes what makes her happy. Young-do reminds her that she’s attracted to scumbags, which is a low-blow. Da-jeong admits she used to, but she’s decided to change. Young-do leaves, and there’s regret between; they misunderstand each other deeply. They are suffering from falling in love too quickly, and old wounds are resurfacing. It’s almost a “too good to be true” situation.
As the episode closes, Da-jeong’s mother visits her daughter and gives her a much-needed hug as she sobs. Young-do returns to his place, and he sobs too. Two people, in love with each other, are unable to communicate their wants and needs.
