What a rollercoaster! Episode 9 really blew my mind and brought out the emotions in me from frustration, sadness, and disappointment. The actors act so well that you can’t help but dislike their characters. Last week, we ended in disappointment with Heejoo and Woojae kissing at the ceremony. But, in the episode today, we’re in for a ride.

Reflection of You season 1, episode 9 recap

Haewon walks into the room where Woojae was waiting to see an empty vows card. This isn’t even strike one but strike 27 — he’s been showing the signs the entire time. Meanwhile, Heejoo and Woojae run up the stairs. Heejoo’s distraught and in tears, slapping him away but they continuously kiss. As we watch the scene, it looks like he’s regained his memory. As they kiss, we see flashbacks of their time together but we might be wrong. After they break away and act like it never happened. At the wedding, everyone’s waiting for the man of the hour and as Haewon says her vows, Woojae gives blank stares and thinks about his kiss with Heejoo. Just bad vibes — he should’ve called everything off before breaking her heart into pieces again.

This isn’t that big of a deal but Heejoo ends up in a car crash — she’s fine of course. But she’s feeling guilty, everything with Woojae is chasing her again. She’s consoled by her friend, Dongmi, who comes to her rescue and confesses. “I thought I was over him. But I was wrong.” It’s more than obvious that she wants him even more, simply because of the wedding with Haewon.

After the wedding, the family meets up at the bar. In the scene, we truly see the relationship dynamics because Haewon’s grandfather is the glue that keeps the family together. However, outside Woojae expresses his confusion to Seonwoo, Heejoo’s brother, about the wedding being too sudden. It’s frustrating because he knew yet went along with it anyway, just like last time. Although her grandfather isn’t fond of him, he awakens his memories. In previous episodes, we learned that the only reason that Heejoo and Woojae ever interacted was due to Haewon’s grandfather’s injury. He shakes his hand and realizes that he lost two fingers and recalls the day it happened — the day he met Heejoo as he filled in for Haewon. We’re finally getting somewhere.

Furthermore, Lisa’s piecing everything together. Heejoo didn’t know that she was at the wedding and saw her mother kissing Woojae. Heejoo’s in for a ride but she broke down and cried about this. At school, she even stabbed herself with a pen and bled heavily until she wound up in the hospital. In another scene, Heejoo confronts Haewon about inviting her daughter to the wedding. But, she didn’t at all — Haewon has her right where she wants her because she’s opened the floodgates. Haewon says “your life must be so ruined to wonder why life is unfair, how other people are doing and if you’re the only one suffering.” But of course, Heejoo continues to backtrack. And Haewon has her where it hurts. “Surprisingly, parents are the ones that cause the most pain to their children”, she’s literally telling her about herself because Heejoo knows the answer and wanted to avoid everything by blaming Haewon and perpetually victimizing herself.

The ending

The ending of the episode was heartbreaking and really makes you hate Heejoo and Woojae. We all know and love Haewon’s relationship with her grandfather. He’s an old man that enjoys coming to Seoul and showering his granddaughter with love. So, he comes over to Seoul on the bus but she’s unavailable to pick him up and calls Woojae to do so. As for Woojae, the call was disconnected and he became distracted at the sight of Heejoo near the exhibition so hung up. From there, everything goes left. He confronts Heejoo, mentioning she lied to him as his memories flashback when he sees her. Then the saddest part of all, Haewon’s calling her grandfather and it seems like he’s dead — he was sitting at the bus station, waiting for Woojae to pick him up but was left to die with the phone ringing in his hand. At that moment, I knew Haewon was going to ensure that she gets her revenge.
