Reflection of You season 1, episode 12 recap

Hyungseong has found out that Heejoo had the affair and it’s ruining him. He’s the family man that wants to be publicly known and isn’t backing down. He’s hurt and seemingly embarrassed but just wants Heejoo to say something. She can’t hide or run anymore because she’s been caught and knows she’s in the wrong. “I’m the reason why Haewon kept following me and pestering you.” It’s nice to see her admit her faults but it’s long overdue, she also mentions how she regrets it every single day.

As for Haewon and Woojae, he’s still confused about everything. In the bar, he tells her, “It pains me that I can’t even remember what I need to apologize for”, and I think this is the revenge Haewon wants as he goes on to say, “Watching you break down because of me is tortuous”. She tells him that it’s good and it’s the exact reason she’s keeping them both close to her. I don’t think she’s looking for love with Woojae, by being by his side, she’s been able to manipulate and torture him because he has no recollection of what happened.

The Jeongs’ are playing happy families after the sudden revelation. “You and our family are all I ever fought for and I won’t give them up,” Hyungseong tells Heejoo as he burns the picture. It’s as if an element of possessiveness and jealousy overtook him then because he was so serious about keeping the family together, maintaining that image when it can change in an instant. Meanwhile, they try to keep up this appearance as they invite Haewon and Woojae for dinner. But Haewon sees through it, “Are you really happy? You’re sat like a trophy wife.” Haewon reminds her of how she mentioned that marriage can dramatically turn one’s life around and mentions that she’s pitiful. And of course, to spite her, Heejoo lets her know that Hyungseong saw the picture and they talked it out as a couple.

Hyungseong is always ready to defend his family no matter what. When Haewon tried to provoke him about their affair, he reminds her of his status and power and that whatever Haewon does to his family can be paid back to her tenfold. Haewon goes extreme and questions ‘How will you pay me back in tenfold if I kill her?”

Haewon and Seonwoo meet up but don’t end on the best of terms. Seonwoo makes excuses for Heejoo’s behavior, emphasizing how since they were children, she’s had a horrible childhood and had to grow up quickly. He noted that her marriage to Hyungseong upended her life for the better but Haewon wasn’t trying to hear that and I loved it. “And you want me to suppress my anger? How are you all so cruel?”. Haewon is the victim in the entire situation yet Seonwoo still doesn’t see past his sisters’ faults.

The ending

The drama finally begins as we learn that Woojae is desperate to visit Ireland to gain his memories. On the phone to Heejoo, he asks why he stayed in Ireland with her for so long? A flashback scene occurs when they are in the meadow that’s filled with heaths, Woojae was Heejoo’s secret. He became possessive and upset whenever Hyungseong visited Ireland, he was angry that she slept with him and pleaded that she needs to leave him.

We learn that he makes the journey to Ireland to get these painful memories back. At the pub, they remember him and give him his old pen. Inside the pen was the umbilical cord from Hosu’s birth and we’re one step closer to the truth. He finally visits the Cliffs of Moher, taking in the nature and atmosphere, and gains his memories back. Flashbacks of him kissing Heejoo flood his mind and he’s ready to get what’s his.  The episode was interesting but it seemed to romanticize extramarital affairs. As always Shin Hyunbeen excels as Haewon and makes you feel her emotions.
