What happened in the Netflix series The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window – story recap

Episodes 1-2

After her daughter, Elizabeth (Appy Pratt), was brutally murdered (and eaten), Anna (Kristen Bell) spends many of her days drinking wine and staring out the window. Her sad days are filled with the same routine, with bitchy neighbor Carol (Brenda Koo) gossiping about Anna behind her back.

But Anna’s mood picks up when Neil (Tom Riley) and his daughter Emma (Samsara Yett) move into the house opposite. As it draws parallels to her family life, Anna ignores the noises in her attic and enjoys the happiness Tom and Emma bring. That happiness, however, is quickly cut short when Anna learns that Neil has a girlfriend, Lisa (Shelley Hennig).

From the get-go, Anna and Lisa don’t get on. It doesn’t take long for Anna to suspect that Lisa is hiding something, with Anna originally theorizing that Lisa is a drug dealer. After Anna stalks Lisa on Instagram, she uncovers a private Instagram account, “SexyRexy”. Then, after a few glasses (or bottles) of wine, Anna believes she witnesses Lisa’s murder. She attempts to help but collapses in the street due to her fear of the rain. Her fear of the rain, of course, is because the day that Elizabeth died it had been raining heavily.

Episodes 3-4

Despite what Anna has seen, Detective Lane (Christina Anthony) informs Anna that there hasn’t been a murder. With common belief becoming that Anna is an unpredictable drunk, there comes a decline in her relationship with Neil. Regardless, Anna refuses to stop prying around. Before long, she starts to suspect that not only did Neil kill Lisa, but was involved in the death of his former wife, Meredith.

As she investigates Meredith’s death, Anna learns that Emma’s school teacher, Ms. Patrick, died on a school trip. And who was also present on that trip? Neil! When Anna follows Neil around, believing that he is about to dispose of Lisa’s body, she learns that he is a ventriloquist, with Lisa’s “body” turning out to be a dummy. So, as a result, Neil takes out a restraining order against Anna.

Episodes 5-6

SexyRexy, aka Rex (Benjamin Levy Aguilar), forces his way into Anna’s house. But just like Anna, it turns out that Rex just wants answers. He tells Anna that Lisa’s real name is Chastity. And that together, he and Lisa would pretend that he was dying as a way to have Lisa con rich men out of their money. But after Anna and Rex have sex, a dog digs up Lisa’s body.

The following morning, Rex gets arrested for Lisa’s death. Believing that she’s just cheated death, Anna decides to move on with her life and ditches the wine. Anna even reconciles with Neil and Emma. Although, once again it proves to be short-lived. After the murder weapon (a palette knife) gets found with Anna’s fingerprints on it, Anna gets arrested.

Episodes 7-8

Once Anna gets released on bail, thanks to BFF Sloane (Mary Holland), Anna fears that she did kill Lisa and calls her therapist. As her therapist is secretly Anna’s ex-husband Douglas (Michael Ealy), he convinces her that she wouldn’t be capable of murdering Lisa. A journey into the attic alerts Anna that her handyman Buell (Cameron Britton), has been living in her house. As a result, Lisa believes that Neil and Emma are in immediate danger.

Anna fights through her fear of rain and attempts to save Neil and Emma from Buell. However, once she is inside Neil’s house, she finds that not only has Buell been stabbed, but that Neil is dead. This is when Emma, despite being a young child, reveals that she is the killer. Her reason for murdering Lisa is that Lisa wouldn’t buy her a chocolate bar. And as Neil was upstairs practicing his “rubbish” ventriloquist act, he didn’t hear a thing.

Emma adds that she also murdered her pregnant mother, as she likes being an only child, and Ms. Patrick. To cover her tracks, Emma reveals she stole Anna’s palette knife and now intends to frame her for the deaths of Lisa, Buell, and Neil. A fight between the pair occurs, with Anna emerging victorious when she stabs Emma in the chest. With the truth out at last and Buell revealed to be alive, Anna overcomes her fear of the rain and reunites with Douglas.

The ending

One year later, and after having another baby with Douglas, Anna flies to New York for a weekend with Sloane. On the plane, and after having a few vodkas, Anna finds Passenger 2A (Glenn Close) dead in the bathroom. But once she tries to alert a flight attendant, the body is gone, and Anna gets told that there was no Passenger 2A. Although when she returns to her seat, Anna finds an item that belonged to Passenger 2A! So was there a murder or not?
