Well, there’s drama everywhere right from the very beginning of “The More Things Change”, so let’s get a handle on this quickly. First and foremost, the team didn’t win State, although Ty led them to a very respectable performance and everyone is super happy with the outcome — except Cal, who throws an insane little fit without realizing Maddie is nearby and then later has to explain to her how he’s keeping his anger issues in check. And apparently not doing a very good job of it.
Sweet Magnolias season 2, episode 3 recap
The championship loss only widens the rift between Ty and Kyle, but the latter is being such a whiny little baby that it’s tough to feel much sympathy for him at this point. Luckily, Maddie knows a therapist, sort of, since Trotter is in a relationship with one. Kyle is predictably upset about this, but Ashley is a nice, disarming guy, so you can tell he’s going to get through to him eventually.
Tragedy strikes elsewhere, though, since Helen loses the baby. This is a devastating development for her, and she goes straight to Erik for help with it, which leads the other Magnolias to wonder what’s going on between them when they’re eventually informed. Not that Dana Sue is necessarily in a position to lecture anyone on romance since there’s clearly a love triangle brewing between her, Ronnie, and Jeremy, which gets pointed out to her, rather hilariously, when she tries to lecture Annie about getting too close to Jackson.
There also seems to be something shady going on among Serenity’s leadership, which is targeting what it loosely describes as “boutique businesses”, mostly relating to The Corner Spa, for supposedly violating certain unwritten rules about parking. This should have been dealt with a while ago, which means someone changed their mind in the meantime — but who, and why? The Magnolias are determined to find out, so we can add that to the list of ongoing “mysteries” we’re dealing with this season.
“The More Things Change” is, I think, Sweet Magnolias getting kind of serious. After the regular margarita night, Helen privately sobs to herself, proving that we’re not just sweeping some of these developments under the rug. At the end of the episode, more drama ensues, since Dana Sue and Ronnie kiss, and Maddie comes home to find Kyle sobbing on the lap of Noreen. Now we’re getting somewhere!
