Summary
Episode 6 is the quirkiest outing yet.
In the opening of Life & Beth Season 1 Episode 6, Beth needs some sisterly advice from Ann. She has Ann meet Beth at John’s home because she wants to get her opinion on him. Right away, she sees that Beth is asking like their mother.
When they get inside, Beth wants to get John alone, but he doesn’t take the hint, and in what he thinks is whispering, wants to know what Beth does not want to say in front of her sister. Ann finally asks John if he has a girlfriend. Beth is mortified, but she gets the answer she wants. John broke up with Katie by text this morning. She sent a thumbs-up emoji back to him.
Life & Beth Season 1 Episode 6 Recap
John offers to take them on a boat ride and this is where we get a glimpse of the injury that has been hinted at throughout the series. Beth gave up volleyball because of a non-sports-related injury in high school. The reason she looked at the boat last episode with trepidation is because it appears she had a boat accident.
In the flashback, we see a motor underwater, and a sound that sounds like someone fell near it. The camera then shows a young beth crying, holding her leg that is bleeding. Her parents look down at her with concern.
The rest of the day is filled with laughs. Ann catches her first fish. They talk about bullying and how John wasn’t bullied even though kids urinated in his lunchbox as a kid. They get high on shrooms and John gets a hook in his finger.
As they drive to the hospital, John pulls random, unusually colored vegetables from his pocket. Beth’s sister then freaks out and runs out of John’s truck at a red light. She makes sure to take her fish, which is in the red cooler.
How does Life & Beth Season 1 Episode 6 end?
When they arrive at the emergency room, Beth runs out of the truck, slamming the door in John’s face. He gets out, she comes back out of the hospital to ask him to move faster. He, in turn, asks her calmly if she is alright.
When the doctor takes the hook out of his finger, Beth asks him if “he will ever be able to finger again?” They go back to his place, where Beth is being assertive in knowing what she wants. She asks John to be her boyfriend. He says yes and then almost like he was thinking this to himself, says, “Johnny-boy wasn’t on the market long!”
After John grabs the gin from the truck, Beth puts on his red flannel shirt. He, like all men who are chivalrous, offers her his only pillow. As they go to bed, as John reads what amounts to a swap meet ad, the camera pans up to the sky and stars. It ends up falling down to Ann’s window.
We see her in her bathtub, in a one-piece swimsuit, and goggles on, while laying in her bathtub. The tub is filled with water and she is seen laying there while her fish swims around next to her.
