If anyone wants to decipher this finale’s ending, be my guest. I cannot believe how stupid this series has gotten, and I know I will have to endure the fourth installment. Anyway, let’s recap the season 3 finale.

Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) season 3, episode 16 recap – the finale and ending explained

The finale opens up in the home of Seo Ban and Dong-ma, with the grim reapers nearby. Seo Ban tells his father that he’d like to move out with Si-eun as he senses that he favors Pi-young. He feels hurt by his father. But then, the father reveals that Pi-young is pregnant, which is why he’s taken extra care of her. Of course, this makes sense for Seo Ban, who probably thought he had overreacted. Meanwhile, the ghost of Song Won asks the grim reapers why they are here, but they will not tell her who they are taking from this life.

A-mi tells Yu-sin what Dong-mi did to his father, i.e., overflowing him with fatty foods until he had a heart attack. Yu-sin cannot understand how he could have been deceived after all these years. A-mi expresses how she can no longer live with Dong-mi and grabs her suitcase. Yu-sin tries to clarify with Dong-mi about the day his father had a heart attack, but she avoids the questions and locks herself in a room. Yu-sin orders her to be committed by the mental health department to take her away, and Dong-mi is distraught.

Si-eun tells Pi-young she’s pregnant, and both women are excited to have this experience together. Later on, Si-eun goes out for a meal with Seo Ban, and she tells him she is five weeks pregnant. Seo Ban can hardly believe it. And then, she tells the father, and he’s also surprised. He’s now going to have two grandchildren. It’s an emotional time for the family, and they decide to celebrate while the grim reapers sit nearby, watching intently.

Hye-ryung is still in the hospital in the finale, while Sa-hyeon’s family wonders what to do next. The doctor tells Sa-hyeon that Hye-ryung’s problem is neurological, and she needs to overcome it. Pi-young and Si-eun visit her, and Hye-ryung believes she’s dying when she isn’t.

The ending

The ending of season 3 is quite confusing, and it’s probably the most random finale ever.

The grim reapers follow Dong-ma everywhere, suggesting he is the target. As he looks at clothes, a segment of the ceiling collapses and hits him on the head. He falls to the floor, and blood pours down his head. The series then shows Seo Ban having a wedding with Song Won. It then flits to Sa-hyeon kissing another woman in the bathtub.

Meanwhile, when Hye-ryung returns home from the hospital, she sees the young child spirit and asks for its name. She can see the child, but no one else can. The child tells the family that “they will snatch the old man.” In the ambulance, Dong-ma wakes up and asks the grim reapers who they are.

The finale will trigger many emotions — anger, confusion, and disbelief that the story has even gotten this far.

Additional points

  • Hae-ryun asks to meet Si-eun. He wants to move into their old apartment, but she’s already rented it out, so she tells him to find a place for himself.
  • Yu-sin crosses paths with Pi-young and learns she is pregnant. He’s in shock, so he runs after her, but Pi-young does not want to talk.
