Summary

The tone, style, and vibe of the show are strong.

After Becky stalks Chloe Fairbourne’s social media, Becky goes to work, where she’ll be filling in as Anish’s maternity cover for five months. When Becky overhears details about a charity event, she sneaks to the said event under the alias of Helena. Once there, she chats with several other attendees. Mainly Josh, who she later has sex with.

The following morning, when she is back home, Becky learns that Chloe has died. Later that night, the local police call her and enquire about why Chloe had called her twice. Becky was unaware that Chloe had called her. Becky continues to stalk Chloe’s social media before spying on her funeral and learns that Chloe was friends with Livia. To get closer to Livia, Becky pretends to be Sasha Miles and attends one of Livia’s art showings. After tracking Livia down to a yoga class, Becky takes advantage of the new receptionist and sneaks into the members-only class. Once the class is over, Becky finds a way to speak to Livia. And when Livia conveniently has a flat tire, Becky offers to help.

As a thank you, Livia cooks Becky a meal and introduces her to her husband, Phil, who is also a painter. After being shown his artwork, Becky learns that Chloe committed suicide. When Becky accompanies Livia to the spa again, they bump into Josh. It’s a very awkward encounter. Only made worse when Josh learns that the name on her bank card says “Becky.” Becky tries to persuade him that it’s her friend’s card, but it seems doubtful that he actually believes her.

Becky has dinner with Livia and her circle of friends. But it ends in disaster when one of the friends, Richard, kicks off about strangers being invited to the dinner. Once dinner is over, Becky opens up to Livia about her friend’s death. And with that, Livia reveals that before Chloe died, she left the quote “to die by your side,” which is lyrics from The Smiths. When Becky asks who the “you” referred to, Livia says she has no idea.

As the first episode comes to a close, Becky spies on Elliot while having a memorable (or imagination) of Chloe inviting Becky to a table. Once Chloe returns home, she searches through a box and finds The Smiths CD with the message, “new school sucks. No one gets me, but who cares, I got you xxx Chloe.” Becky then has the vision of her and Chloe dancing on the edge of a cliff.
