Physical season 2, episode 7 recap
“Don’t Try This at Home” opens with Sheila at a rather frosty board meeting. The head honchos have all met up to discuss a controversial videotape they have been sent anonymously. Obviously, Sheila has orchestrated all of this and sent the tape in herself, but Auggie and the other prehistoric investors are completely unaware of this scheme. The suited men talk about her debauchery and the fact that this is a family business. They admit that they will have to terminate her contract. Sheila fakes a tear and accepts their decision, taking her poster down from their wall. It’s a delicious setup that works perfectly. Sheila has an out and can now go it alone.
Her first move is to find another investor and she phones Greta to arrange a meeting straightaway. Greta worries that they made things weird with the orgy proposal and fears they are breaking up at this meal. But Sheila wants to go into business with her, to make them partners instead. Greta is overjoyed and screams with excitement in the busy restaurant. Her only wish is for there to be no more secrets between them. She believes these secrets are causing Sheila to hold back and not reach her full potential.
Meanwhile, John is falling apart at home. The other church members are praying for his wife and daughter to pull through, but John thinks his sinning has led to all this bad luck in the first place. At the hospital they are informed that the baby will live, but he confesses to his wife and breaks down anyway, ruining any cause for celebration. John admits to sleeping with Sheila on nineteen occasions, then reels off a list of many more transgressions, including drinking alcohol and specific sexual acts. His wife shouts for him to stop and demands he becomes the man of the house once again. She doesn’t care about his sinful ways, she just wants him to be supportive and dependable.
Danny suggests a treatment program to Sheila for her eating disorder, passing his wife a pamphlet. She believes he’s trying to force her to give in and regress, but Sheila doesn’t argue with her husband, which is progress I suppose. She starts to work out after her meeting with Greta, hoping to brainstorm some fresh ideas. Danny tells her to rest and she barks at him, stating that this is her form of recovery. In a lovely moment, Danny joins in with the exercise and actually enjoys himself. This single, selfless act almost reignites their relationship and the two smoke marijuana together to brainstorm as a couple. They concoct the idea of ‘rediscover yourself with Sheila’ and Danny suggests investing in the project himself.
Greta is furious when Sheila mentions these new progressions and the friends argue. Greta has always distrusted Danny and calls him a cheat. Sheila admits that she has cheated on him as well, that she is bulimic and hates herself. Greta takes this confession as evidence that Sheila is selling a lie and worries she looked up to her for the wrong reasons. The argument ends with Greta hoping Sheila gets the help she needs, but it is quite a sad exchange overall and possibly the end of their friendship.
The ending
Sheila may have potentially lost her best friend and investor, but things are about to get a whole lot worse. She receives a phone call from John and meets at their regular motel spot. Sheila is ambushed and John’s wife steps out of the bathroom. They talk of forgiveness and repenting one’s sins. The couple loom over Sheila and tell her to pray with them. The shot then cuts to Sheila heading towards the treatment facility in Los Angeles, or is she heading towards something else entirely?
