From the creators of the highly-acclaimed show The Americans, FX’s The Patient stars Steve Carell as a psychologist who is held captive by a serial killer played by Domhnall Gleeson with the unusual request to be cured of his impulse to kill people. It’s darkly funny, methodically plotted, and filled with psychological depth, so here are 5 shows that fit that mold.

Like For Like – 5 series like The Patient you must watch

You (2018)

Modern-day, social-media focalized romance and good old-fashioned murder merge in supremely entertaining fashion in You. The Netflix original show follows Joe Goldberg, a bookstore owner, as he falls in love (multiple times), develops a deep and violent obsession (multiple times), and then kills anyone who gets in the way of his romantic pursuits. It’s trashier and perhaps a bit more fun than The Patient, but it definitely scratches a similar itch.

The End of the F***ing World (2017)

Here’s a show that seems to have been forgotten in the vestiges of Netflix’s vast catalog but needs (NEEDS!) to be watched and talked about far more. It’s deeply original, extraordinarily funny (in a pitch-black sort of way), and features some of the best performances and writing you can find in modern TV.  Originally airing on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, The End of the F***ing World is streaming on Netflix and tells the story of James, a 17-year-old who is convinced that he is a psychopath, who goes on a road trip with Alyssa, a rebellious, vulgar classmate.  The first season is near-perfect, and although ultimately unnecessary, the second season is also worth watching.

Maniac (2018)

It’s messy and tonally inconsistent at times, but standout performances from Emma Stone and Jonah Hill – as well as a truly hilarious turn from Justin Theroux – make Maniac a compelling, if flawed, Netflix original.

Mindhunter (2017)

David Fincher’s Mindhunter is a lot more grim and brutal than the other shows on this list, but if you are fascinated by serial killers (like I am) and the accurate portrayal of their unique psychology, then this Netflix show set in the 70s – following FBI agents as they interview and create a criminal profile around some of history’s most infamous killers – is for you.

Severance (2022)

It’s probably the most dissimilar show to The Patient on this list, but there is a similar tone and pacing. But more than that, Apple TV+’s Severance is worth watching just for its incredible cinematography and production design.
