Summary

A cracking start to the series. Well-written characters with a truly interesting plot. If this wasn’t on your radar, make sure it is now.

This recap of the Hulu series Reasonable Doubt (2022) season 1, episode 1, “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” contains spoilers.

A brand new show with only the trailer and a few details to go by. So, it’s very difficult to predict whether the show will be any good or even what it’ll necessarily be about. But the below recap at least gives a good idea of how things start.

Reasonable Doubt season 1, episode 1 recap

The series starts with a woman tied to a chair begging for her life before she is shot. It then cuts to six months earlier, and Jax is living a seemingly normal life with her family. She gets a call from Mark, and he informs her that one of her clients has potentially committed a crime. But Jax does not believe that crime has been committed. What follows are a few scenes that highlight her busy family life, moody children, and hectic work schedule. After her husband, Lewis, hires some security, she accuses him of tracking her after he had previously given her an ultimatum. Their argument makes it clear that they are in the middle of a trial separation. And Jax tells Lewis to leave.

Jax decides to focus on work. Her client reveals that he had sexual relations with the individual in the past, and whilst it had been rough, it was not sexual assault. Whilst Jax suggests that the client apologizes to the victim, the client is more concerned about getting an NDA. So Jax starts working on the case. As she is struggling to sleep, she attempts to get some meds to overcome the issue. And Lewis stalks her through the house’s security as she hugs a guy. Her children want to spend more time with Lewis, so Jax continues to push through with work.

The ending

Jax goes to see Damon in prison, and she’s livid to learn that he will be confessing to a crime that he apparently didn’t commit. After she gets drunk, her mood worsens. She goes to see Lewis and demands to see her children. She and Lewis have a conversation. Both admit to being hurt, and they end up having sex in the car. Following her questionable methods of ending the claim, she gets called out for her behavior. Towards the end of the episode, Jax and Lewis put up a united front during a family event.

After Jax rushes out of the event, so she can do work, Lewis calls her out for her selfish behavior. Jax’s “friend” Will visits her again, and they have sex, with Jax self confessing that she loves criminals. As they have sex, Jax stares at the security camera; does she know that Lewis is watching? It seems like it, and both she and Lewis seem to enjoy it. The first episode ends as Jax learns that Kalisha is dead.
