When it comes to sci-fi, fans of the genre tend to get lost in a world far, far away. It pulls us into a high-tech, futuristic atmosphere that we can only ever dream of encountering. With series like exception on Netflix, it’s easy to become familiar with these characters in an instant.

With only eight episodes, Netflix managed to create something special through anime. What this series does is have viewers question what’s out there and if it’s even safe for us in the future. In a distant future where humans are forced to leave Earth, a spacecraft carrying a 3D-printed crew of specialists is sent to terraform a new planet. There have been many series that explore the universe and send groups of droids, specialists, or even astronauts all trying to understand what it’s like out there for all of us. We have always questioned what it’s like to be living on this planet, but there are series like exception that highlight the good and the bad and maybe even answer some of our questions.

Star Wars: Visions (2021)

Set in an alternate history, 20 years after a war between the Feudal-Jedi Empire and a renegade Jedi sect called the Sith, a lone wanderer known only as the “Ronin” witnesses a legion of former stormtroopers attempt to besiege a small village. Star Wars has always given us a different perspective on the galaxy, and Star Wars: Visions is an extension of all those possibilities. This franchise has given viewers a more hopeful look at the future, and that’s something we need a bit more of.


Blade Runner: Black Lotus (2021)

In 2032, an amnesiac replicant called Elle wakes in the desert and makes her way to Los Angeles. As she rediscovers her identity and history, she swears revenge on a group of hunters who targeted her and others for sport. The Blade Runner aesthetic is always something fun to dive into because of how futuristic everything looks. Blade Runner: Black Lotus highlights how history always tends to repeat itself.


Dr. Stone (2019)

In 2019 AD, a mysterious flash suddenly petrifies nearly all human life. The human race was frozen in stone for 3,700 years, until in April 5738, a 15-year-old prodigy named Senku Ishigami is suddenly revived to find himself in a world where all traces of human civilization have been eroded by time. This is an interesting series because of how it jumps through time and shows different eras of civilization. Dr. Stone poses many questions and leaves viewers wondering how living on Earth is possible.


Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045 (2020)

When sustainable war spawns a “post-human” threat, Major Kusanagi and her Section 9 team are called back into action. In the year 2045, after an economic disaster known as the Synchronized Global Default, rapid developments in AI propelled the world to enter a state of “Sustainable War.” Anything that has to deal with a futuristic war is bound to have high stakes and some great fight choreography. The Section 9 team has great characters within it to go on this journey with them. Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045 is worth the watch.


Psycho-Pass (2012)

The state of SEAUn introduces the Sybil System in a bid for peace and safety, but the cracks soon begin to show. Inspector Tsunemori is sent to investigate. A more straightforward approach to exploring unknown territory and uncovering something shocking that can affect life as they know it.


Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021)

Darkness is a computer-animated miniseries that follows government agent Leon S. Kennedy after a quickly contained zombie outbreak in the White House escalates into a diplomatic crisis between the United States and China. Resident Evil is a very long franchise that always delivers on the kills, and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness does just that. Once the government gets involved in a zombie outbreak, things always spiral out of control. It also leaves people questioning if this could ever happen.

It’s all so grand and wonderful, but then they have to take responsibility for their actions. Sonny Boy is definitely one to add to the list.


Legend of the Galactic Heroes (2018)

The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Müsel and Yang Wen Li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. An anime adaptation of the novels, produced by Kitty Films and animated for the most part by Artland and Magic Bus, ran from 1988 to 2000. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is an action-adventure through the Galactic Empire, and it delivers on all fronts. From the story about these rivals to the action on each planet, watching the rise to power doesn’t get more interesting than this.


Darling in The Franxx (2018)

Darling in The Franxx follows a squad of ten pilots, particularly focusing on the partnership between Hiro, a former prodigy, and Zero Two, a hybrid human and elite pilot who aspires to become entirely human. The animation began international distribution simultaneously with its domestic release. For a series to have 10 pilots, there needs to be some sort of chemistry between them, and that’s what carries this series. This series explores humans and AI in a unique way that has viewers wondering if this is how life will be in the years to come.


Eden (2021)

Eden takes place 5000 years in our future. AI robots have taken over as the dominant species on the planet while humanity has all but disappeared. The story really begins when two farming robots – E92 and A37 – find a young girl called Sara and raise her in secret. It’s always interesting when AI is explored in futuristic series because of how advanced the technology has been getting. The evolution of tech is a fascinating thing but it can also be harmful in some way.


The Legend of Korra (2012)

Set 70 years after the events of “Airbender,” Korra moves to Republic City to master her final element – air. With the guidance of the previous avatar Aang’s son Tenzin, she has to fight crime and face a growing anti-bending movement that threatens to rip the metropolis apart. Korra is an incredible character and this series highlights her best qualities and shows what happens when you finally achieve your goals. Definitely watch The Legend of Korra.
