We discuss whether there will be The Good Nurse 2, a sequel to the Netflix film The Good Nurse, and will contain spoilers.

In Netflix’s The Good Nurse, Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne play two nurses who quickly become very good friends. She is struggling with the healthcare system in the States while he is providing her with comfort and attention. Soon, a couple of mysterious deaths begin to happen in their hospital, and eyes are quickly turned to Charles Cullen (Redmayne). He has a convoluted history in other hospitals that not many are willing to discuss and is soon let go on a technicality from his current job so that the hospital can avoid any liabilities.

He is arrested shortly after, and Chastain’s Amy is able to pull a confession out of him. Cut to a title card at the end that tells us he ended up confessing to 29 murders, but the number could go as high as 400. Meanwhile, Amy, who suffers from a heart disease, is able to pull through. The film, which Ready Steady Cut has given a 3/5 to, is a quiet and intimate yet intense thriller that, despite us knowing all the variables, manages to keep the viewer hooked for 120 minutes. The Good Nurse ending seems very definitive, but could there be room for a sequel? The immediate answer is no, but let’s have some fun here and speculate what could a potential sequel to The Good Nurse look like.

The Good Nurse sequel potential release date

We are looking at some point in 2025 at the earliest, probably, depending on the people involved. It’s probably not a very long shoot, but since there is no apparent story to tell, Netflix would definitely have to reinvent itself here. There’s also the issue of screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns’ availability. She is supposed to be writing Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie at the moment, which will probably take up most of her time coming up (if that movie is even happening). Netflix can always get a different screenwriter, though.

But there’s also the issue of Jessica Chastain’s schedule. The Oscar-winning actress is going from gig to gig. However, while her agents and Netflix figure out a shooting schedule, a screenwriter should have enough time to work on a script. Given a year of pre-production minimum and another year for filming and post, it would be impossible for the movie to come out before the end of 2024, so most likely, 2025.

The Good Nurse sequel cast – who might be in it?

I feel like the only character that absolutely needs to come back is the title character, Amy (Chastain). Sure, the first movie is about her and her relationship with a serial killer and how that affected his arrest. But, as I’ll argue in a moment, it’s probably best to leave that apart for the sequel and concentrate on the actual issue the first movie was trying to tackle.

The Good Nurse sequel plot: what could The Good Nurse 2 be about?

The main message of the first movie is about how rotten the entire healthcare in the U.S. is. A serial killer can go by himself murdering dozens, if not hundreds of patients, and the hospitals will not be held responsible for absolute negligence, obstructing a police investigation, and essentially covering up multiple crimes for their own benefit. Meanwhile, a nurse with a heart problem has to hide her condition because she might lose her job, and therefore not be able to afford the surgery she needs to survive. To a non-American like me, this sounds extraterrestrial.

The second movie should continue to focus on that message, and depict Amy’s struggle to take care of herself while working endless hours at the ICU. The real person probably has one or two stories to tell about this, and it would probably be an extremely relatable movie to plenty of Americans who go through or know someone who does. I would personally call the real Amy and ask for permission to tell her story. Representation matters and this is not just for races or sexual orientations.
