The Calling season 1, episode 5 recap – why did Brad Holt run away from Janine?
Episode 5 five opens at a morgue where Avi meets with his friend, Rabbi Cermak, to perform Shemira, the Jewish tradition of keeping watch over a deceased person. The pair discuss their experiences as children with it and Avi gets a flashback about his father.
Janine goes to the Kids Campus daycare, the facility Earl visited in the previous episode. Police and the FBI are in a rush to evacuate all the children as someone left a bomb in front of the facility. As one parent is walking away with his son, he comments about the bomb being fake. This raises her suspicions, and she takes a few photos of the man before he manages to run off.
Janine also notices a strange-looking guy among the crowds who runs away as soon as she tries approaching him. The man doesn’t make it far before Janine catches up and detains him. At the station, Brad Holt explains that he only ran away because Janine was chasing him and denies any involvement with the bomb, which turns out to indeed be fake.
The team speaks to Miss Anna Harvey, the daycare owner, who reveals that Brad’s daughter was attending the daycare before his wife pulled her out. According to her, Brad Holt is a lovely guy, while his wife is more on the demanding side. Miss Harvey identifies the man who told Janine the bomb was fake as Paul Serra, a lovely man and a great father.
When Avi and Janine interview Paul, he claims he only said the bomb was fake to keep his son calm. Halfway through the interview, Paul’s oldest son, Danny, tells the two detectives that he knows who really planted the bomb because his “first dad” told him. A distraught Paul explains that Danny has an imaginary parent, before reluctantly agreeing to let Avi interview the boy.
Meanwhile, Janine is trying to learn more about Avi. He tells her that while he was standing shomer the previous night, he had a vision about his father. When Avi was just a child walking his dog one night, he heard his dad falling to his death. When Janine asks if he ever looked into his father’s murder as a police detective, Avi admits he never has.
At the station, Avi speaks to Danny in the interrogation room with Janine and Paul watching from behind the glass. The boy reveals his parents have been fighting a lot and claims his mom isn’t in Mexico with her parents, but visiting with the “first dad.” Danny refuses to say who planted the bomb but suggests it was his dad. Paul states that his wife, Elisabeth, walked out on him after a bad fight.
Earl goes to interview Marcie, Brad’s wife and she describes her husband as a “boring” man that avoids confrontation at all costs. Back at home, Marcie tells Brad off for running from the police and making himself look guilty.
At the daycare, Miss Harvey receives another threat from a mysterious woman. Her employee Sarah goes to the police station to report the phone call and says she suspects Miss Harvey knew who was on the other end of the phone call.
The Calling season 1, episode 5 ending
After learning there are no records of Elisabeth Serra boarding a flight to Mexico, Avi and Janine go to Paul’s home. Avi is suspicious of Paul’s version of events, while the man sticks to his story and dismisses the idea of infidelity in his marriage. Still unconvinced, Avi questions why Paul never reported his wife missing and the episode ends with the detective asking, “What did you do to your wife?”
