Summary

Dead to Me unveils another revelation and is full of surprising moments.

We recap the Netflix series Dead to Me season 3, episode 7, “Can We Be Honest,” which contains spoilers.

Dead to Me continues to finally pile up surprising moments. Last week we found out that Jen (Christina Applegate) was pregnant. However, we were not sure Ben (James Marsden) was the father until now. However, he never finds out because it turns out he may have a bigger secret than Jen does at the moment.

Dead to Me season 3, episode 7 recap

Yes, Jen is pregnant, but who is the father? Well, four months have passed since Ben and Jen had sex. And over that time, Judy has gone through chemotherapy. Jen admits that Ben is the father because she says the father is in rehab. The doctor confirms that, despite her age, she is pregnant. Unfortunately, when Jen mentions that she won’t tell anyone until she is “showing,” the doctor makes a face and tells her that that time is now. So, Jen asks for the nearest Marshall’s and buys a shawl to cover her stomach.

And yes, Jen has to break the news to poor Judy, who has had five miscarriages and cannot have children. When Jen tells her, Judy is upset but tries to handle it gracefully. She leaves home and eventually returns, telling Jen she supports her. Jen asks Judy if she wants to help pay her back for the help with chemotherapy. Can she please help with this? Why? Because before Ted died, he was the “mom”, so to speak, of the house while Jen worked. She doesn’t know how to raise a child on her own.

Nate continues to investigate the hit-and-run and Steve’s murder. All to Detective Perez‘s chagrin. Why? Because he keeps getting closer and closer to the truth. It was Jen who killed Steve, and Ben who ran into Jen. However, Ben doesn’t know he is the father of Jen’s child nor that the mother of his future child murdered his brother. Nor does Jen want to turn Ben in because, again, he is the father of her child. This is a no-win situation. Nate wants to follow up with Agent Glenn, but Perez says she will do it. Later, Nate finds out she failed to do so and thinks she is blocking his attempts at police work because he may be a bad cop.

Ben gets out of rehab and visits Jen and Judy. He tells them both he is going to go back north. He is there to make amends, but the girls quickly forgive him. Ben leaves before Jen can tell him she is pregnant. Not that she would anyway. Ben then stays silent after he says there is no reason for him to be there. This is called, ironically, the pregnant pause (therapist term) to get the other person talking and fill in the silence. Ben hopes Jen will tell him to stay, but she stays quiet. Ben then leaves.

Judy, though, now realizing time is fleeting, wants to make things right between the two. She invites Ben to the house, and he admits something. There was someone else there the night Ted died and in the back of the car. Who was in the backseat when Judy hit Ted with Steve’s car? It turns out it was Ben that night, passed out drunk, and from Steve punching him, the night they hit Ted. I found this strange that Judy never mentioned this, but it is a surprising revelation. Apparently, Ben didn’t even know or remember it.
