Streaming on Prime Video, Mammals was created by playwright Jez Butterworth and directed by occasional Vice Principals and Veep director Stephanie Lang. The series follows Michelin-star chef Jamie (James Corden) as he uncovers secrets and betrayals about his pregnant wife, Amandine (Melia Kreiling), with the help of his brother-in-law, Jeff (Colin Morgan), whose marriage to Lue (Sally Hawkins) is itself struggling. Inspired by the weekly column in the New York Times, Modern Love is a star-studded (Anne Hathaway, Kit Harrington, and Dev Patel to name a few) anthology series that explores love in all its variations through many different stories.
Love Life (2020)
Another anthology series, the first season starred Anna Kendrick with William Jackson Harper replacing her as the lead in the second. Love Life jumps through various timelines to show how people are shaped by the relationships and love interests in their life.
Fleabag (2016)
You’ve probably heard the Fleabag hype – that it dominated at the 2019 Emmys, that it’s one of the greatest shows of all time – and perhaps decided that the love for it was overblown and you ended up skipping it. But if you like the overall themes and tone of Mammals, and British people doing British things…watch Fleabag. It absolutely lives up to the hype and is one of the funniest, most heartbreaking series you’ll ever watch. I’m not going to even tell you what it’s about–just go watch it.
The Wrong Mans (2013)
James Corden’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are a fan, check out The Wrong Mans. It’s a dark comedy about how a low-level government worker gets caught up in an intricate plot of crime and conspiracy after he answers a random cell phone at the sight of a car crash.
Doctor Foster (2015)
Marital tension is a major through-line of Mammals, but in Doctor Foster it is the heartbeat. The British series follows Dr. Gemma Foster as she goes down a dark path after beginning to suspect her husband is having an affair.
Breeders (2020)
Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard star as husband and wife and father and mother in this FX dramedy. This show is as much about marriage as it is about parenting, and if you liked the tone and unflinching view of modern marriage in Mammals, then you will probably enjoy Breeders.
Gavin & Stacey (2007)
Here’s another one for you James Corden fans out there. This light-hearted comedy is what made James Corden a star in the first place.
Scenes From A Marriage (2021)
This one’s certainly not a comedy, but it offers another baring look at marriage through the electric performances and chemistry of Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain.
The Affair (2014)
The critically-acclaimed show examines in deep, psychological detail the impact of two extramarital affairs. It’s good stuff and considerably more insightful than Mammals.
How I Met Your Mother (2005)
This one is probably the most different from Mammals, but if you just can’t get enough of relationships and all their messy bits, then check out How I Met Your Mother if you somehow haven’t already. This incredible sitcom will be the funniest series to scratch that particular thematic itch.
