Where was the Apple TV Plus film Emancipation filmed?

This article discusses “Where was the Apple TV Plus film Emancipation filmed” and may contain minor plot references.

After his Oscar-winning performance in King RichardWill Smith returns with another award-worthy performance in Emancipation directed by Antoine Fuqua. Writer Bill Collage explores the journey of a runaway slave in Louisiana, as he forges through swamps on a torturous journey to escape the plantation owners who nearly killed him.

Many men have had the will to push through no matter the obstacles and Smith’s Peter is a prime example. The film is difficult to watch because of the subject matter but does well to educate audiences about the treatment of slaves. There is a percentage of people who there who do not support making slave films because they feel that Black trauma is exploited.

On the other hand, a percentage believes that films such as these are important to make because people need to be properly educated on American history. There are probably many stories that are yet to be told, so it’s important for these stories to come out in any shape or form.

Since it is based on a true story, the location of New Orleans, Louisiana is probably the most important thing that Fuqua had to incorporate. The location scouts found plantations to visit in order to have a detailed set for the film itself.

Where was the Apple TV Plus film Emancipation filmed – a breakdown of locations

New Orleans, Louisiana

Peter tried to escape the plantation and went on a journey through New Orleans in order to be free. He ended up joining the Union Army in the American Civil War. The entire film does take place here. And New Orleans has become a hotspot for many other films over the past couple of years, generating more work for local filmmakers.

Rosedown Plantation, St. Francisville

The crew did pay a visit to Rosedown Plantation in order to get a sense of the history that came before them. And to understand the movie that they were making. There are specific ones that spoke to the location scouts and it was an important reminder to visit the land. Visiting this land can bring up many emotions because of the knowledge everyone has in regard to slavery. The lives of these men and women will always be tied to those grounds and it’s heartbreaking.

Ardoyne Plantation, Houma

This plantation was on the outskirts of Houma and was a bit of a way out. The location scouts wanted to be as authentic and detailed as possible because Black stories such as Peter’s should be told with a level of care and respect. Fuqua knew he wanted to be as honest and tender as possible with Peter’s story and that’s why he went to specific locations to retell his story. Adapting someone’s life into written words is one thing, but to visually represent it on screen with maybe family members watching is an entirely different situation.
