10 movies like Troll you must watch

Troll Hunter (2010)

Another film heavily based on Norwegian folklore, Troll Hunter follows a group of students who are trying to find proof of the existence of mythical creatures. The movie was so popular that many fans hoped 2022’s Troll was a sequel to it. It’s not, yet both features share the same mythological basis for their stories.

The Ash Lad: In the Hall of the Mountain King (2017)

This adventure film, also from Norway, centers on a poor farmer’s son who goes on a quest to save the princess from a scary mountain troll. While this title is a fantasy movie set in medieval times, it also features Mads Sjøgård Pettersen who plays the role of Kris in Troll.

The Mist (2007)

While this movie is a bit darker than Troll, it does include an unexplained creature wreaking havoc. Based on a Stephen King novel of the same name, the film follows a group of small-town Maine residents stuck in a supermarket after their town gets engulfed in a mysterious mist.

King Kong (2005)

Peter Jackson’s King Kong features an A-lister ensemble cast including Naomi Watts, Jack Black, and Adrien Brody. The film is set in the 1930s and follows a filmmaker who travels to Skull Island, where he and his team meet the giant gorilla, King Kong. Of course, they bring it to New York city where chaos ensues.

Jurassic Park (1993)

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the original Jurassic Park’s popularity spanned a franchise of six movies, several books, TV shows, and video games. The film’s premise is about a mad scientist who brought dinosaurs back to life only to put them in a zoo and a family trying to survive when the T-Rex escapes its enclosure.

The Thing (1982)

While John Carpenter’s The Thing doesn’t have a giant monster, it does have a monster no one can fully understand or see coming. Widely considered to be among the director’s best works, the film received widespread critical acclaim and its themes are as relevant today as they were in the early 80s.

Godzilla (2014)

2014’s Godzilla was a reboot of the popular Japanese franchise of the same name. Under the direction of Gareth Edwards, this monster epic follows a group of people trying to stop several prehistoric alpha predators from stomping on everything.

A Quiet Place (2018)

The critically acclaimed A Quiet Place starring Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, and Millicent Simmonds centers on a family who needs to maintain absolute silence to survive alien creatures that attacked the world. Unlike Troll, this horror movie focuses on the struggles of a single-family unit when faced with a world-threatening monster.

Eight Legged Freaks (2002)

A more lighthearted giant monster film, Eight Legged Freaks follows the people of a small town trying to survive getting attacked by giant spiders. This comedy horror stars David Arquette, Kari Wuhrer, and even a teenage Scarlett Johansson.

Predator (1987)

Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Predator was the first in a very popular franchise. The film tells the story of a rescue team coming face to face with an alien monster deep in the rainforest.
