Originally planned as a miniseries, Showtime’s Your Honor recently premiered its second season. The series features Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston as a respected judge willing to do whatever it takes to protect his son after the boy killed someone in a hit-and-run, even if it means breaking the law.
While critics were, well, fairly critical of the show, fans can’t seem to get enough of Cranston’s uncanny ability to portray antiheroes perfectly and make us all question our morals. Similarly to Your Honor, this award-winning series centers on a father taking extreme measures to protect his family.
Kvodo (2017 – 2019)
Showtime’s Your Honor is a remake of this award-winning Israeli series that also ran for two seasons. If you’ve enjoyed the English-language version, you’re very likely to find Kvodo a compelling piece of entertainment.
For Life (2020 – 2021)
Based on a true story, For Life stars Nicholas Pinnock as an imprisoned man who takes an unusual approach to overthrow his wrongful conviction – He becomes a lawyer and starts working on his case while still imprisoned. Just like in Your Honor, family is the main character’s primary motivation and the show offers a unique perspective on the U.S. criminal justice system. The series got canceled after only two seasons, but it makes for an infuriating yet compelling viewing.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
New Blood was the highly anticipated revival of the beloved Showtime series, Dexter. While the main character is a serial killer with a heart of gold and not a judge, the show’s focus is on a father whose entire (fake) life is turned upside down because of his son. The show finds the vigilante serial killer, Dexter Morgan, living a peaceful murder-free existence in upstate New York a decade after faking his death. Things get complicated when the son he abandoned manages to track him down.
Defending Jacob (2020 – )
This Apple TV+ miniseries is an adaptation of a best-selling namesake novel by William Landay and its premise almost mirrors Your Honor. The show stars Chris Evans as a district attorney whose life takes a dark turn when his teen son becomes a murder suspect.
The Sinner (2017 – 2021)
The Sinner is an anthology thriller that examines the reasoning behind brutal acts of violence. Each season is a self-contained story, all tied together by Bill Pullman’s character – a detective determined to get to the bottom of what truly happened. Like Your Honor, the show explores the stories of ordinary people who end up committing the unthinkable.
A Mother’s Son (2012)
In this two-part British drama, Hermione Norris stars as a mother who begins to suspect her teenage son of murdering a classmate. While the lead in Your Honor makes a clear decision to protect this son at all costs, this series is focused on the mother’s inner turmoil as she’s trying to figure out the best course of action.
Prodigal Son (2019 – 2021)
This Fox procedural series focuses on a unique type of father-son relationship. The son is a crime-solving NYPD cop, while his dad just so happens to be a serial killer. Starring Tom Payne, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Michael Sheen, The Prodigal Son ran for a couple of seasons before its untimely cancellation.
White House Farm (2020)
Based on a harrowing true-crime case, this mini-series tells the story of a young man who commits the ultimate betrayal and murders five members of his family, including two innocent children. Jeremy Bamber’s 1985 crime shocked his small Essex community. This six-part centers on the police investigation, the court case, and Jeremy’s complicated relationship with his adoptive parents.
Guilt (2019 – )
Created by Neil Forsyth, Guilt follows two brothers and their attempts at covering a hit-and-run they both committed. Like Your Honor, this ITV thriller centers on family members trying to protect each other from facing any consequences following a crime.
