Summary

Episode 13 brought some truth in another dramatic turn of events in this compelling K-Drama.

We recap the Netflix K-Drama series The Interest of Love Season 1 Episode 13, which contains spoilers.

I never believed that Ahn Su-yeong (Moon Ga-youngslept with Gyeon-pil. Obviously, it’s easy for me to say that now with this episode now released, but there was something not believable about the situation.

We can have our own theories and individuals regarding characters in this series, but at the crux of everything, Su-yeong is a self-sabotager, a term that is common in modern society. We delve into situationships and complicated relationships rather than commitment. But eventually, self-sabotaging can make a person incredibly lonely. It all boils down to whether Ha Sang-su (Yoo Yeon-seok) rides out the wave of confusion. Let’s recap Episode 13.

The Interest of Love Season 1 Episode 13 recap

Episode 13 opens with Ahn Su-yeong meeting Gyeon-pil late at night. We then revisit the scene where Gyeon-pil tells Su-yeong that he once dated a rich woman, but he had to break up with her because her cousin told him to. So he slept with his ex’s best friend to get closure. It’s a strange story for a strange character; a character that is unlikeable.

In the present storyline, Jong-hyeon rings Su-yeong, but Gyeon-pil answers her phone, which confuses him. Su-yeong cruelly switches her phone off rather than speak to Jong-hyeon, after Gyeon-pil implies that they are being intimate. Gyeon-pil asks Su-yeong if she will regret what she has done to Jong-hyeon. She claims she will not.

Sang-su is confused after hearing that Su-yeong slept with Gyeon-pil

And then, we return to where we were at the end of Episode 12. Jong-hyeon angrily confronts Su-yeong; she implies she slept with Gyeon-pil. Jong-hyeon punches Gyeon-pil. This is when Sang-su hears that Gyeon-pil allegedly slept with Su-yeong. It’s a confusing moment for everyone. It’s difficult to make sense of.

Sang-su talks to Gyeon-pil, who admits that he slept with Su-yeong. Gyeon-pil also provides a voice recording that supposedly proves it. Sang-su punches him, and at this point, the man deserves everything that he gets, regardless if it is true or not.

Gyeon-pil compares what he did to what Sang-su did to Mi-gyeong. Meanwhile, in the work bathroom, Mi-gyeong tries to confront Su-yeong about the situation, but she ignores her. An upset Mi-gyeong tries to talk to Sang-su too, but she gets a similar response.

Later on, a shaken Jong-hyeon talks to Su-yeong. She apologizes and tells him that he can start his life over again and find a new place to love. Streams of tears run down Jong-hyeon’s face. He’s devastated.

Sang-su is in disbelief and wants the truth

Rumors spread in the workplace; colleagues state that Su-yeong was “two-timing two men.” Sang-su tries to maintain his emotions but defends Su-yeong, grabbing Mr. Kim by the collar to stop him from gossiping.

Afterward, Sang-su asks Su-yeong how her job interview went and then follows her outside. She asks him why he’s following her — she wants to know why he is not “curious” about what happened while everyone else is bad-mouthing her. She’s upset because Sang-su is acting “indifferent.”

At this point, Sang-su cannot win. It’s a bewildering scenario he finds himself in.

Mi-gyeong still cares about Sang-su

A concerned Mi-gyeong speaks to Sang-su; she still cares, and she’s worried about him after he grabbed Mr. Kim by the collar, but he tells her not to worry. And so, Mi-gyeong confronts Gyeon-pil; she cannot believe what he’s done. Gyeon-pil tells her that he’s surprised she is not happy because Sang-su and Su-yeong cannot be together now.

Mi-gyeong continues to be dismayed, and she tells Su-yeong that she got Jong-hyeon fired. Su-yeong coldly tells her that she never asked her to understand her as a person.

Sang-su does not believe Su-yeong slept with Gyeon-pil

In the evening, Sang-su tells Su-yeong that he’s afraid of not seeing her again. It’s a striking admission. He doesn’t seem mad at her. He’s willing to suffer so he can see her again. The next day, an emotional Su-yeong spends time with her mother. She admits she is tired. Tired of life. Tired of things being so damn complicated.

Sang-su tells Gyeon-pil that he does not believe that he slept with Su-yeong, and even if he did, he still likes her. Gyeon-pil calls it “profound love.” Sang-su expresses the rage within him to kill him. Gyeon-pil reminds Sang-su what Mi-gyeong’s father is like if he decides to break up with her for Su-yeong. However, a drunk Sang-su wants real reasons behind Gyeon-pil’s actions.

Sang-su and Mi-gyeong conclude their painful break-up

Sang-su finally speaks to Mi-gyeong properly; he apologizes for his actions and how he has hurt her. He calls her a wonderful person, but he finds her background too much to handle sometimes. He admits he took advantage of her feelings for selfish reasons and that he knew he didn’t like her as much as she wanted him to. Sang-su sobs and tells Mi-gyeong that he does not want her to be hurt because of him. Mi-gyeong walks away.

There’s a sense that Mi-gyeong is finally taking back her dignity as she grabs the car keys of the car she bought him. She heads to the car park and smashes the car windscreen with a brick before breaking into tears. She gave too much to Sang-su, and she knows it. Self-love is a long journey ahead.

Sang-su and Mi-gyeong are now officially broken up. A painful breakup. Pain that could have been avoided for both of them.

The Interest of Love Season 1 Episode 13 Ending Explained

Meanwhile, at Su-yeong’s apartment, Jong-hyeon angrily packs his things in another painful break-up. They end up arguing in the rain. Jong-hyeon hints he may not take his exam. He’s in disbelief at what happened to their relationship — he wonders if it’s because he was poor and had no future. Jong-hyeon asks Su-yeong to be honest and admit she never loved him. Su-yeong tells him that what he felt for her was not love either, which only angers him more.

Su-yeong repeatedly apologizes as the rain continues to soak them. She tells him she did sleep with Gyeon-pil. Jong-hyeon calls her a “real bitch.”

Flashbacks show that Su-yeong did not sleep with Gyeon-pil; it was her plan all along. She asked Gyeon-pil to help her with the plan, knowing that he wants to help Mi-gyeong. He still has feelings for Mi-gyeong. Su-yeong explains that she needed an irrevocable reason to end her complicated situation.

However, in the present day, Sang-su finds Su-yeong outside, knelt in the rain, and he puts an umbrella over her head. He smiles at her. He isn’t going anywhere. Sang-su is genuinely in love with Su-yeong.
