We review the Netflix stand-up special Jim Jefferies: High n’ Dry. It was released on the platform on February 14th, 2023.
Jim Jefferies is a stand-up comedian that has dabbled in the world of acting and late-night talk show hosting. He has released nine stand-up comedy specials since 2008, including his latest, Jim Jefferies: High n’ Dry, on Netflix, his third special for the streaming giant.
Jim Jefferies: High n’ Dry Review
The show features jokes about stones koalas, his dad’s vasectomy, and a battle of his hair vs. his sex drive.
Jefferies comes to the stage and opens with a pandemic joke. Thankfully, it was hilarious how women with ugly faces but great bodies are missing wearing masks. Thankfully it was short-lived, as he jumped right into some koala bear jokes.
I give massive credit to Jefferies for the pivotal opening five minutes that had me laughing and wanting more.
After reeling us in, Jefferies decides to get his hands dirty by tackling Greta Thunberg. Now, he says he agrees with everything she stands for, and people might yell at him about going after her with his jokes, but she is now 19, which is fair game—followed by saying that he’s been waiting three years to tell these jokes.
Next, he tackled the LGBTQ and Trans community. As you can tell, Jefferies isn’t afraid to tackle some of the topics he might receive some press over (he even mentions that).
It’s a simple reminder that for anyone that watches this stand-up special or any special, these comedians have one job: to tell their jokes and make us laugh. Now, if you don’t laugh, we also have the option of turning it off.
Furthermore, if you are offended by any comedian’s jokes, maybe don’t watch them. That said, Jefferies didn’t tell the jokes to “offend” anyone but to make his audience laugh which is different from some other comedians in this space. I give him a massive amount of credit for his writing.
Jefferies’s delivery and accent elevate some of his material to being funnier than maybe someone without that accent. As I mentioned, Jefferies is working on his ninth special and is a veteran in the game.
However, I don’t think he fully fleshed out his material, including his bit on the Bachelor/Bachelorette. The entire bit felt like a reach and even somewhat dated. Outside of that, I found myself enjoying the rest of his jokes.
Is the stand-up comedy Jim Jefferies: High n’ Dry any good?
Yes, it’s 100% worth checking out if you want to laugh. Of course, every joke doesn’t hit a home run, but you will laugh more than not for over an hour. A little reminder, though, is that Jefferies might not be the comedian for you if you aren’t looking to watch something with some sensitive material.
I loved it and can’t wait to check out his next one.
