Who is Gary Fryklind? We explain the title card obituary that appears in Shadow and Bone Season 2.
The fantasy series Shadow and Bone became a streaming hit in 2021 and quickly received a second run that would debut on March 16th, 2023.
The series, based on a series of novels by Leigh Bardugo, follows the story of Alina Starkov, an orphan and cartographer of the Ravka nation’s First Army. The character discovers that she is the Sun Summoner and has the power to create and control light.
The show’s first season was favorably received, and Netflix revealed that 55 million households had watched the first season in its first 28 days of availability.
Fans were curious about a tribute at the end of Season 2, Episode 6, titled “Ni Weh Sesh (I Have No Heart).” The episode concludes with a message that reads, “Dedicated to the memory of Gary Fryklinds.”
Who is Gary Fryklind?
Gary Fryklind was not a member of the cast and crew of Shadow and Bone, but he was the father of Daegan Fryklind, executive producer and co-showrunner of the Netflix series. Daegan also writes for the series too.
Daegan is also known for her work on shows such as The Listener, Bitten, and In the Dark.
As well as daughter Daegan, Gary had two other children — sons Garrick and Kerby. Gary was born in Wadena, Saskatchewan, in March 1941. Gary loved sports, particularly golf, and would eventually pursue a career in teaching art. He would become a teacher at Western Canada and John G. Diefenbaker high schools, passing on his skills to thousands of pupils throughout his teaching career.
What did the obituary in Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 6 say about Gary Fryklind?
The title card that appeared at the end of the episode stated, “Dedicated to the memory of Gary Fryklind.” The episode was directed by Karen Gaviola, and the episode was the only one in this season that was written by daughter Daegan Fryklind, making it perfect for a tribute to appear in.
How did Gary Fryklind die?
Fryklind died “suddenly” at eighty years old on April 22nd, 2021. After his sad passing, daughter Daegan posted a beautiful Instagram photo of her “Pop” in June 2021.
He is seen with a broad smile across his face, and the touching photo beautifully captures Gary’s essence. In other posts on social media, Daegan would describe Gary as her “truest confidante” and “biggest champion.” Although not fully understanding the complex work that his daughter’s entertainment career entailed, Daegan’s father was always enthusiastic about her work and would ask her compelling questions about her projects.
