It took nearly two years for the second installment of the Netflix fantasy show, Shadow and Bone, to drop on the platform.
Based on a YA series of books from the Grishaverse by Leigh Bardugo, the series follows an orphan mapmaker, Alina Starkov (played by Jessie Mei Li), as she’s exploring new powers that could be the answer to saving the world from the darkness it’s been engulfed in.
The series, created by Eric Heisserer, also stars Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Danielle Galligan.

Carnival Row (2019 – 2023)
Starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne, Carnival Row is set in the Republic of the Burgue, where refugee mythical creatures were forced to flee their war-torn homes. This dark steam-punk series ran for two seasons on Prime Video.
His Dark Materials (2019 – 2022)
The BAFTA-nominated, His Dark Materials also centers on a young orphan girl with a set of unique abilities. Based on the novels by Philip Pullman, the British series ran for three seasons before reaching its conclusion.
Shadowhunters (2016 – 2019)
The Shadowhunters are a secret group of human-angel hybrids who can see and fight demons and other evil entities. Similar to Shadow and Bone, this show also tells the story of a protagonist who learns about her powers and becomes the key to saving the world.
Merlin (2008 – 2012)
In this retelling of Arthurian legends, Colin Morgan stars as the titular wizard who, as a young man, meets the future King Arthur (Bradley James) and vows to protect him while keeping his magic a secret. The BAFTA-winning series had a 5 season run, and you can binge all the episodes on Prime Video.
The Magicians (2015 – 2020)
The Magicians follows two childhood friends as they uncover the world of magic and the threat it poses to human society. Based on a namesake novel by Lev Grossman, the Syfy series aired for five seasons before its cancellation.
Lockwood & Co. (2023 – )
Another Netflix Original, Lockwood & Co., is a supernatural thriller set in an alternate universe where teens are tasked with hunting and stopping ghosts from killing the living. Like Shadow and Bone, this show also centers on a young female character whose abilities are crucial to saving everyone else.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 – 2003)
In what’s probably the most iconic series in existence, Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the titular heroine who just so happens to be the one girl in all the world destined to protect the world from vampires, demons, and other dark entities. Two decades later, Buffy is still considered one of the most influential shows out there.
Fate: The Winx Saga (2021 – 2022)
Based on an animated series, this show follows Bloom (played by Abigail Cowen), a girl who finds out she’s a fairy and goes to enroll at a school for magical beings. Unfortunately, Netflix canceled the series after only two seasons.
Cursed (2020)
Yet another series inspired by Arthurian legends, Cursed, follows the epic adventures of a young witch, Nimue. But in this version of the story, she’s the one the famed sword Excalibur chooses as its keeper.
A Discovery of Witches (2018 – 2022)
This British fantasy drama tells the story of a witch forced to team up with a vampire to solve the mystery of an ancient book. The series aired for three seasons before its untimely cancellations.
