Summary

After an amusing episode filled with success, things take an unexpected but fascinating turn out of nowhere.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series Dr. Stone Season 3 Episode 3, “First Contact,” which contains spoilers.

Senku (Yusuke Kobayashi) and his friends were quite productive in last week’s episode of Dr. Stone, securing both a capable chef and the ability to make cameras.

These accomplishments bring them that much closer to their goal of setting sail across the sea.

Before they can do that, however, they must still acquire oil—a task that will be much easier now with cameras to survey the land more efficiently. Right now, it feels as if nothing can stand in their way, but that feeling never lasts long.

Dr. Stone Season 3 Episode 3 Recap

The episode starts with Senku using his cameras to take pictures of the land from the hot air balloon. Back at the village, Kohaku and Gen analyze the photos while Chrome and Ukyo survey the land on foot.

When Senku requests a protein-rich dinner for the group, Francois enlists Suika’s help to locate wild boar in the area. With Kohaku’s help, they’re able to capture more than one, bringing back several wild boars to both eat and raise.

What resource does Kohaku discover while looking for truffles?

While searching the photos for areas with truffles, Kohaku notices a large black spot that turns out to be the very Sagara Oil Fields they’ve been searching for instead.

In order to find black truffles, Francois and Suika use one of the boars to sniff them out in the forest. However, when the boar begins eating their truffles, Suika uses her dog, Chalk, to sniff out the truffles instead.

How do Senku and his friends find the oil field?

While struggling to locate the oil fields on foot, Senku suddenly remembers that wild boars were once used to locate oil fields in the 1800s. Using this knowledge, he finds a boar that smells from wallowing in mud and oil and follows it to find the oil field from the photo.

What technology does Senku say he is going to rebuild next?

Now that they have gasoline and a working motorboat, Senku says the next piece of technology he will rebuild is the GPS so that they can navigate the seas.

Does Ruri confess to Chrome?

In order to power the GPS and strengthen their cell phone, the group builds a large radio tower. With Ruri being the first to use the stronger phone, Ginro suggests she use the first call to sea to confess to Chrome. However, before she can say how she feels, the cell phone intercepts a coded message from an unknown source that keeps repeating the phrase, “Why?”

While the science behind Dr. Stone is always fun and interesting to follow, I was excited to see things take an almost eerie turn at the end of the episode. Knowing what we know about the Stone World, I could’ve never imagined there would be more people out there, but the chance that this message is connected to whoever petrified humanity makes this season that much more enticing.

The storytelling in this series has always carried it, even making plotlines that should feel dull or slow feel exciting. I’m inquisitive to see where this message leads, especially when Senku and his friends seem to be doing so well on their own.
