Summary

Despite some recap overkill in the beginning, this turns out to be a solid premiere episode that sets the tone for the season well.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series Dr. Stone Season 3 Episode 1, “New World Map,” which contains spoilers.

Season two’s Stone Wars brought the battle between Senku (Yusuke Kobayashi) and Tsukasa to a head, with Senku coming out victorious. Although the Kingdom of Science prevailed, Tsukasa made the ultimate sacrifice by choosing to fight alongside Senku in the end.

Now with him on ice, Senku has vowed to one day revive his old rival by figuring out the science behind petrification. However, to do that, first, he’ll have to figure out how to travel to the other side of the Earth in this primitive world.

Dr. Stone Season 3 Episode 1 Recap

The episode opens with Senku, Ryusui, and Chrome arriving at Ishigami Village in the hot air balloon.

Senku recruited Ryusui in hopes of sailing to the other side of the world to find the source of the petrification beam to revive Tsukasa.

When Ryusui asks how long Senku plans to stay in the village, he replies around one to two years, depending on how long it takes them to find oil.

Why stopped Ishigami Village from growing?

According to Ryusui, Ishigami Village and the rest of civilization never grew because of food shortages. Kohaku later confirms this, explaining that whenever the village had a bad year of fishing, people often died of starvation, dwindling their numbers.

After hearing about their food struggles, Ryusui decides they need to set their focus on agriculture. He tells Senku they should use the hot air balloon to search for seeds, and with a bit of searching, Senku is able to locate a mature field of wheat for them to harvest.

How does Taiju improve the soil?

After several of their fields do not produce wheat, Taiju is able to improve the soil by sprinkling ground-up seashells in the dirt. The calcium in the sea shells neutralizes the soil’s acidity, allowing their wheat crops to grow.

Dr. Stone Season 3 Episode 1 Ending Explained

After figuring out the soil, Taiju is crowned the “Food King.” Senku and the villagers are able to successfully grow wheat on their own, giving them additional food security in the new world. However, after several failed attempts to turn the grain into bread, Ryusui and Senku realize they must find a way to revive a chef.

I always appreciate it when a season picks up right where the last one left off. Although I felt the episode recapped a bit much in the beginning, I do appreciate that it made sense in context, as they used this as a moment to explain things to the only recently revived Ryusui.

Every episode of Dr. Stone is a learning experience, with Senku finding solutions for problems I hadn’t even considered. It seems this season is going to continue with the same fast pace, fantastical science solutions, and an overall informative but adventurous tone. I’m curious to see where things go and how the group progresses, especially now that agriculture is in the mix.
