The Recruit is a spy show with comedic sensibilities. It follows CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks who becomes involved in dangerous international conflicts with shady groups after an asset tries to expose their relationship to the agency.

Starring Noah Centineo and created by Alexi Hawley, everyone has fallen in love with this bumbling oaf.

While season two has been greenlit for The Recruit to appear on Netflix, it likely won’t appear for ages. So here are ten shows like The Recruit that you must watch in the meantime.

The Rookie (2018)

Another show by Alexi Hawley, The Rookie, is about recently divorced John Nolan. After a horrible experience during a bank robbery, John decides to turn his life from a construction business to joining the cops, and since he is 40 years old, the only force willing to accept him is the Los Angeles Police Force.

So he packs his bags to start a new life-fighting crime.

Archer (2009)

This animated show follows the world’s top intelligence agent Sterling Archer, as he and his team constantly sabotage each other’s missions just for kicks. From traditional espionage to drug busting and private investigating, this comedy will make anyone who likes parodies cry with laughter.

Spy (2011)

Spy takes a common premise in entertainment – a father desperate not to be a disappointment to his young son – and adds spies to the mix. The plot follows Tim, who, trying to impress his 10-year-old son, Marcus, accidentally joins the MI5 as a trainee spy and is thrust into a world he knows nothing about.

The Americans (2013)

Following both the personal and professional lives of the Jennings family in the USA, a seemingly normal one on the surface until you realize their Soviet deep-cover agents during the 1960s. The story is set during the 1980s and includes their two American-born children, who are completely unaware of the secret that their parents hold.

It’s partly inspired by true events, with the Soviet Union placing sleeper agents inside the USA that remained hidden for decades.

Homeland (2011)

Being a CIA officer is undoubtedly a tough job, but that only gets tougher when you consider that Carrie Mathison has bipolar disorder.

She starts to believe that a US Marine Sergeant, Nicholas Brody, and former prisoner of war, actually joined the ranks of Al-Qaeda during his capture and now poses a major threat to national security.

Slow Horses (2022)

Dysfunctional teams are a common problem within security forces, as this thriller follows a team in MI5 who cannot bring themselves to work together under their nasty boss Jackson Lamb. What’s worse is that the makeup of this team is anyone who’s made a career-ending mistake and now has to come together and try to redeem themselves.

Quantico (2015)

Quantico follows the lives of up-and-coming FBI agents from all walks of life as they complete their training at Quantico base in Virginia, but during their exercises, one of them is suspected of being a sleeper agent for a terrorist organization.

Alex Parrish is framed for a bombing and must prove her innocence.

Blindspot (2015)

Finding a mysterious tattooed woman in Times Square with no recollection of her memory, the FBI must help her recover her memories. But they don’t realize that her tattoos are clues to a criminal conspiracy.

Tehran (2020)

An Israeli spy thriller, Tehran follows a Mossad hacker called Tamar with orders to destroy and neutralize Iranian air defenses so the Israeli Air Force can bomb Iranian nuclear facilities.

Her mission fails, however, so she’s forced to go into hiding in Iran and remains undiscovered by Faraz Kamali, head of investigations at the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Spooks (2002)

Spooks is a spy drama show following those inside the office suites in MI5 known as ‘The Grid’ as they work to protect the UK from terrorist attacks and other sinister foes.
