Is The Nurse on Netflix based on a true story?

This article discusses whether the 2023 Netflix series The Nurse is based on a true story, and naturally contains spoilers for the entire season.

The Nurse, not to be confused with The Good Nurse, is a four-part Danish miniseries streaming on Netflix. Adapted from the book of the same title by Kristian Corfixen and directed by Kasper Barfoed, it tells the story of newly graduated nurse Pernille Kurzmann Larsen, who begins to suspect that a celebrated senior colleague, Christina Aistrup Hansen, might be killing her patients.

The Nurse has plenty in common with other true crime thrillers, and it’s also very similar to The Good Nurse in its premise, so fans are rightly wondering whether the story recounted in the miniseries is true. Here’s everything we know.

Is The Nurse on Netflix based on a true story?

Yes, The Nurse is based on a true story. Nykøbing Falster Hospital in Denmark is a real hospital, Pernille and Christina are real people, and many of the events depicted in the series really did happen.

Christina was subsequently diagnosed with histrionic personality disorder, and her crimes were thought to be her acting out a bizarre play with herself as the main character. She gave sick and weak patients lethal doses of morphine and diazepam.

She also gave her own 7-year-old daughter strong prescription sleeping medication.

Where is Christina Aistrup Hansen now? Is she still in prison?

Yes, Christina Hansen is still in prison. She was sentenced to life for the murder of Viggo Holm Petersen, Anna Lise Poulsen, and Arne Herskov, and for the attempted murder of Maggi Margrethe Rasmussen.

However, the sentence was commuted to four charges of attempted manslaughter, since “The Legal Service Council reviewed the medical information and concluded that it was not possible to be fully sure that the morphine and diazepam injections were the direct causes of death.”

The court changed Christina’s sentence to 12 years rather than life. She’s still serving the sentence.

Where is Pernille Kurzmann now?

Pernille Kurzmann is still a nurse at Nykøbing Falster Hospital. She and Niels Lundén, the doctor who helped her catch Christina, still seem to be together.
