The star-studded Taiwanese political drama Wave Makers, from director Lin Chun-yang and screenwriters Jian Li-ying and Yan Shi-ji, revolves around the opposition party campaign staff during a presidential election, facing professional and personal hurdles at the mercy of a fickle electorate and a ruthless 24-hour news cycle.

The season combines various ongoing subplots with plenty of mudslinging on each side, requiring a lot of personal and moral compromise. Weng Wen-fang and the CZD party work to get presidential candidate Lin Yueh-chen elected over incumbent president Sun Ling-hsien of the MHD party.

How is Chang-tse’s infidelity exposed?

One of the essential ones is the exposure of Chang-tse’s relationship with Ya-ching. It’s only the tip of the iceberg of Chang-tse’s infidelity but Ya-ching’s involvement will obviously harm the campaign.

After Wen-fang and Chia-ching strategize, they discover Ya-ching’s apartment empty, but find a flash drive containing evidence of Chang-tse’s extramarital dalliances and present affair with his current assistant.

Of course, given Chang-tse’s homelife has been a particular aspect of this subplot, it’s also harmful to Jung-chih.

When the news breaks, Chang-tse denies everything and is supported by his wife, nonetheless.

Ya-ching is dissatisfied with this media spin so anonymously shares her conversations with Jung-chih. The smoking gun is photographic evidence which is eventually given to Ya-ching by Jung-chih, who runs away from home.

Who wins the election?

With Chang-tse’s reputation demolished, CZD go all in on the campaign and Yueh-chen wins the election by a landslide, bringing in a new age for the government and finally giving the dedicated campaign staff some time off. Wen-fang plans to run for office in her local district again, though, so there’s still plenty of work to be done.
