Summary

There’s some intrigue to be found in Hannah and Bailey’s investigation, and the mystery surrounding Owen starts to build some traction once again, but there are still many flaws to this series. Mainly the poorly placed overuse of flashbacks, which are distracting and jarring.

The investigation into Owen’s mysterious disappearance and his murky past continues in The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 4. Hannah (Jennifer Garner) and Bailey (Angourie Rice) look into Owen’s previous identity and track down his old University Professor, who may have answers.

Grady (Augusto Aguilera) attempts to locate Hannah and Bailey, who’s seemingly done a runner, while Jules (Aisha Tyler) and Jake (Geoff Stults) play catch up with their associates.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

Episode four begins with Hannah and Bailey discussing the shocking revelation from the previous cliffhanger. Owen and Bailey’s identities were changed.

This means Bailey’s birth name and birth date completely differ from what she has known for most of her life.

The teen starts to panic, unsure of her own life up until this point. Hannah doesn’t know how to reassure her stepdaughter either.

Who is Tobias Cookman?

They decide to stay and continue their mini-investigation. Hannah wonders about all the random stories Owen told from his past. Something he once said has to be real. They talk about his job as a valet and an eventful boat trip, but no specific details come to mind. They remember his professor Tobias Cookman and an amusing story Owen repeatedly told. Bailey finds Tobias’ details online. He is an American mathematician and Professor at the University of Texas, Austin.

At the University, Bailey and Hannah crash one of Tobias’ lectures, hoping for answers. Tobias (Victor Garber) is at first hostile towards the duo but soon comes around.

Bailey explains that her father is missing and asks if he remembers Owen’s old name. Tobias doesn’t recognize Owen’s old photograph but seems to remember Owen’s story, him being the worst student and Tobias framing his poor exam result.

With Tobias on their side, they raid the old University records, looking for any clues. Tobias asks why Owen has changed his name. Hannah admits that they are searching for the truth.

While they hunt through old files and exam papers, Tobias remembers Owen blaming his problems on a girlfriend, who made it hard for him to concentrate. Bailey believes this could be her mother, Olivia. They decide to check out the yearbook photos next.

During this investigation, Hannah speaks with the US Marshal Grady. He reiterates that he is here to help, but Hannah doesn’t trust him. She mentions Owen and Bailey having no records, which is news to Grady.

He ponders the idea that Owen used his own tech to cover his tracks. Grady asks for Hannah’s location, mentioning that she is in danger. Hannah realizes that Grady isn’t telling him the whole story and hangs up.

How does Grady find Hannah’s location?

Grady and his team try to track down Hannah and Bailey, but the US Marshal is ordered to drop the case by his boss. It isn’t their problem, after all. Grady may have dropped the hunt, but his team carried on regardless and found the plane tickets. He now knows where they are. He may be inclined to carry on the investigation.

Elsewhere, Jules and Jake keep up their own investigation. Jules tells Hannah about the key found in Bailey’s piggy bank. It is used to open a fire-proof safe. She asks if Owen owned a safe.

Hannah is unsure but tells Jules to check her studio anyhow. She also asks Jules to find her duffel bag, but that’s now gone missing.

Jake confronts Jules about the secrecy. He needs to know what his client is hiding from him. Jules protects her friend but eventually relents. She tells Jake about the duffel bag of cash, which may have held half a million dollars.

Jake says that Hannah could face conspiracy charges and obstruction of justice charges because of this mistake.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 4 Ending Explained

Back in Austin, Hannah, and Bailey look through the yearbook photos on a library computer. Bailey is anxious about what they may discover, although she is just as eager to discover the truth.

While Bailey checks the records, Elenor from the church calls Hannah. She forgot to check pre-season games and has now found a wedding at her church that matches the dates.

The wedding was for Andrea Reyes and Charles Smith. Bailey looks up those surnames on the system and finds a Katherine Smith. Her photograph looks like a younger version of Bailey’s mother, Olivia. The teen is stunned by this discovery.

The fifth installment carries on from the previous episode’s final scene. Bailey is pretty sure that she has just found a photograph of her mother, Katherine Smith.

Underneath the photo, it states that she was the Debate Team President, celebrating a victory at her family’s bar, The Never Dry.

Bailey demands that they search this place right away, but Hannah wants to continue to look through the names of Owen.

Who is Charlie Smith?

Bailey wins this argument, though, and the duo heads to the bar. On their way there, they research the names Charlie Smith and Andrea Reyes, the couple that married at the Texan wedding Bailey went to as a child. Hannah discovers that Charlie Smith now runs The Never Dry bar.

Hannah fears things may get dangerous and asks Bailey to hold back. The teen goes to a nearby coffee shop to research the names further. Hannah enters this shady-looking bar alone, where she meets Charlie for the first time.

At the coffee shop, Bailey calls her boyfriend, Bobby, to discuss this latest revelation further. He sends her the address of Andrea Reyes’ home.

While at the bar, Hannah asks Charlie many questions, weaving one big lie to find clues about Owen’s past. Charlie is quite defensive but mentions his sister Katherine dying in a car accident.

Hannah shows Charlie a photo of Owen, and the bar owner loses it. He suddenly becomes angry and aggressive, asking Hannah who sent her here.

Bailey enters the bar just as Charlie is shouting at Hannah. Charlie recognizes Bailey and calls her Kristin. Hannah panics and flees with Bailey. Charlie gives chase, running after them through the busy streets. They eventually lose him, though.

Who was Bailey’s mother?

Taking a break by the river, Bailey has an intense flashback to a childhood memory at this exact location. She was watching the bats with her father, Charlie, and Andrea. Her mother was there too. She was right. Katherine ‘Kate’ Smith was her mother.

The teen updates Hannah on this memory. She also remembers being called Kristie or Kristin. Hannah admits that Bailey’s mother did die in a car accident, so that bit was true. Paranoid, they’re in danger and head back to the hotel.

While Hannah and Bailey dig deeper into Owen’s past, Grady pushes forwards with his investigation. The US Marshal fears Hannah and Bailey are in imminent danger and asks to illegally track their phones.

Then Grady is sent Owen’s phone and passcode in the post, which gives him access to all of Owen’s emails.

Grady updates his boss Maris on Owen’s intel. Information off the phone proves that the coder was working on fixing The Shop’s primary problem and that he begged Avett not to go public. They finally get Hannah’s location, and Grady heads straight to their hotel.

What is Owen’s real name?

In the hotel, Hannah wants to pack and leave, but Bailey is still desperate for answers. Jules calls with some vital information. Owen’s real name is Ethan Young. They found his will hidden in a safe at Hannah’s studio.

Who is Nicholas Bell?

Jules explains how Owen is caught up with some rather dangerous criminals. Owen’s father-in-law and Katherine’s father, Nicholas Bell, is a mob lawyer representing the Campano family, the largest crime syndicate in North America. Owen gave evidence against them after his wife was killed in suspicious circumstances.

Both Jules and Jake urge Hannah to flee Texas and destroy her phone immediately. This reverts back to the very opening scene of the series. Hannah smashes her phone and then finds Bailey has gone missing. Grady arrives to see Hannah in her hotel room, panic-stricken.

The episode ends with Charlie calling his dad, Nicholas Bell, to inform him that he has seen Kristin (Bailey) today. Then Grady and Hannah drive the streets looking for Bailey, who is still missing.
