Summary

Saint X continues to employ daytime drama levels of writing and acting in “Colonial Interference.” Somehow this tragic storyline leaves viewers with no emotional connections whatsoever, while the anticlimactic ending offers no enticing hooks for audiences, nothing to make them want to return the following week.

We recap the Hulu series Saint X Season 1 Episode 5, “Colonial Interference,” which contains spoilers.

The latest installment of Saint X, titled “Colonial Interference,” continues the many inter-cutting timelines from the series.

In the present, Emily’s family grieves the passing of Alison (West Duchovny) on her birthday. Emily (Alycia Debnam-Carey) obsesses over the murder some more, and she stalks Gogo (Josh Bonzie) through the streets of New York to an art show. Then in the past timeline, Alison continues to fool around with both Tyler (Caleb Lowell) and Edwin (Jayden Elijah).

Saint X Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

The episode begins with the search party again looking for Alison after her disappearance. The writers want to keep their viewers guessing, so they throw out many possible suspects in Alison’s death.

You have Gogo suspiciously running away from the search party, Ethan refusing to join the search, and Olivia crying, stating that she’s made a terrible mistake.

Then there is an emotional Tyler, his father aggressively asking him if he has lied to the cops as they’d planned. And then Edwin packs to leave the island for good, providing even further suspicion.

In the present, Emily continues to research Alison’s death. She’s even found footage of an Alison murder tour run by Desmond on the island. Her investigation is all-consuming, disrupting her work and her personal life. Josh reminds her that today is Alison’s birthday. She’d even forgotten this crucial date.

Why has Emily asked to meet with Tyler?

That night, Josh questions Emily about the cab driver he saw her with previously. Emily lies, saying that he is chivalrous in the rain. Next, Emily meets with Tyler, interrogating the old acquaintance after all these years. She wants answers but doesn’t remember much from the holiday herself.

Tyler talks about Edwin and Gogo. He remembers Edwin being a charismatic and handsome chap, but he was also a manipulative and deceitful person too.

Emily remembers Gogo as kind and sweet. Tyler thinks Gogo just did whatever Edwin told him to do. He states that Gogo went to prison for drug possession, and Edwin may even have moved to New York.

After this meal, Emily searches for Gogo again. She waits for him at the cafe. He says that he’s nervous because he’s meeting an old friend. Emily assumes that this is Edwin. She questions the man further, and he gets defensive, raising his voice and telling her to leave him alone.

Gogo storms off. Emily may have pushed him too far this time.

Emily asks Sunita if they can follow Gogo to catch him meeting Edwin in person. Sunita urges her to concentrate on her work instead, to let this obsession go. Emily, of course, cannot let it go. She ditches work and follows Gogo to an art show.

Who is Gogo’s old friend?

The art show is hosted by and was created by Bery. This is the old friend Gogo was talking about, the hotel’s babysitter, not Edwin, as first assumed. The friends discuss the island and their old lives. Gogo refuses to speak with Desmond or Sara anymore. Bery passes Gogo a letter, possibly from Edwin. He reads the note, which upsets him greatly. Gogo storms off once again.

After the art show, Emily contacts Sunita, debating the contents of the letter. Sunita isn’t interested; Emily’s obsession has led to them both being fired. Sunita has had enough.

What is Edwin’s plan?

Back in the past timeline, Bill confronts his daughter about her dual flings. He worries that Alison will upset Tyler and she could get Edwin sacked because of these naive romances. Meanwhile, Tyler prepares a romantic picnic for Alison, awkwardly asking Edwin for help. Edwin tells Desmond that he plans on sleeping with Alison on the last night to avoid any hostility from Alison’s dad that could follow.

Alison and Tyler make out at their romantic, private picnic that night. Tyler wants to carry on their relationship after the vacation, but Alison isn’t so sure. Edwin watches the two teens kissing. Tyler starts to get forceful again, and Alison walks away, stating that they will remain as just friends.

Elsewhere, Ethan and his pregnant wife, Dana, try to spice things up in the bedroom. Dana wears Alison’s shorts, the ones which Ethan had stolen from the teen. Olivia and Wes decide to make out with nothing better to do. Olivia sees Alison upset and chases after her, though.

Saint X Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained

Sara confronts Edwin, who has turned Gogo against her. She asks why he is so controlling with her, if he is in love with her or not. But Edwin walks away, refusing to justify his actions. He has an odd relationship with Sara, one that eventually leads to the two getting married in the present.

The episode ends back in the present, with Josh scoping out the cafe that Emily has become obsessed with. He locks eyes with Gogo and starts to grow suspicious of this stranger.
