The FX-produced Hulu series Class of ’09 is the latest in what is sure to be a long line of film and TV shows rooted in our present anxieties about AI.
Starring Brian Tyree Henry and Kate Mara, the story plays out across three timelines, each informed by the other, teasing at the wider conspiracy that led to the development of a self-aware crime-fighting AI system that has made our near-future look like an Orwellian technological dystopia.
Here’s what happened in Class of ’09 Season 1 Episode 3:
- In the past, Poet was taught to do an aggressive J-turn by the FBI, which pays off in the future timeline where she’s pulled over and almost arrested for manually driving instead of allowing her Tesla to drive itself.
- In the present timeline, Hour has developed “Better Life”, a connected database designed to allow FBI agents to share resources and knowledge in real time. However, the Bureau pushes back against the system and shuts it down.
- Tayo hits a brick wall in his hunt for Mark Tupirik, and turns to Hour’s system for help. Better Life helps him catch Tupirik, however the man seems happy to be imprisoned and warns Tayo that something’s coming.
- In the future, Poet takes the information Amos gave her to Hour. It reveals that the system is now self-aware and is operating without human input, and that Tayo knows more than he’s letting on.

The latest episode is scheduled to release on Hulu on Wednesday, May 24, at the following times:

How many episodes will Class of ’09 Season 1 have?
Class of ’09 will have eight episodes. It premiered the first two episodes on May 10, and the rest will air weekly through all of May and most of June. Here’s the full episode schedule:
